People should integrate greenhouses more into how they build roofs. That's valuable light you're missing out on there.

And we are heading into winter.

Unless you have greenhouses, not much will grow for the next 5 months.

Honestly! Greenhouses solve (9or lessen) a lot of the problems of home gardening, like my aforementioned daily battle with squirrels and other animals who literally have nothing to do BUT stake out your garden every day. Greenhouses rule.

it's also almost November! without greenhouses & grow lights wtf are people supposed to grow?!
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

I've constantly wondered why grocery stores don't put greenhouses on the roof to grow a portion of the fruits and veggies they sell

Just been sowing wildflower seeds into plug-plant trays💚🌼

Many have instructions to sow in April under glass. Erm, these are true-wild-form regionally native wildflowers, so how the fluff did they evolve before humans & greenhouses, & by dispersing their seeds in summer/fall?? 😂🤷 #wildflowers

We don't have to. We can build our own network of food banks, public supermarkets, urban greenhouses and farms, and people can sign up for and join memberships at those networks in local areas. Think Costco on steroids. We could build it like now if we wanted to

One of those "every day is a gift" type guys. We were always at his greenhouses (he had six of the long ones out in Maryland farmland) at dawn and he was always already awake, had made his wife breakfast, and started a pot of coffee.

📢 Agricultural workers are among the people most vulnerable to extreme heat. They toil under the hot sun and in humid greenhouses or nurseries, often with few breaks and places to adequately cool.

Was thinking... Ways Government might help people through tough times ahead in Newfoundland and Labrador:
• Greenhouses: free/low cost
• Compost bins: free/low cost
• Rain barrels: free/low cost
• Winter classes on how to use them
• Student jobs to help install and maintain the greenhouses.

I hold no preference among flowers, so long as they are wild, free, spontaneous. (Bricks to all greenhouses! Black thumb and cutworm to the potted plant!)

#tbt: The fall ritual, wrestling the tropicals — plumerias, bananas, giant ferns — onto a flatbed so we could wrestle them into the greenhouses and shop for the winter. "We" in this case being the strapping extra muscle brought in for the incredibly heavy lifting.

The stores where this shit happens are always the chains, which never have the staff or the resources to set up dropped stems and leaves to root, then grow them into new plants for sale.
They may even have that forbidden in their contracts with the greenhouses they buy plants from.

Agriculture in urban areas can help local challenges such as hunger, flooding and extreme heat. But urban areas cannot qualify for the farmland preservation funding to allow communities to invest in innovative approaches, like rooftop gardens, hydroponics, school greenhouses, and community gardens.
N.J. senator: Urban farming could transform Jersey’s food deserts, fill gaps caused by federal cuts
With more than 827,000 New Jerseyans relying on food assistance, expanding city farming initiatives could provide fresh food access while creating jobs and improving environmental resilience.

We can manufacture electric planes, trains and cars. We can create local hubs to power homes. We already have greenhouses that work in the Arctic. We can build rail across the tundra. We can control our own destiny without oil&gas. @liberalca.bsky.social #cdnpoli www.harbourair.com/going-electr...

Yes, well housing is desperately needed again greenhouses community centers, emergency shelters. There are a lot of things that this building and other buildings could be turned into. We don’t just have a housing crisis. We have a food insecurity crisis as well etc.
