But if that's original, how can one explain the shorter reading?

The gap is purely hypothetical, and oddly the DSS editor retroverted every part of OG 1 Samuel 1:24-25 except καὶ προσήγαγε τὸ παιδάριον, so instead of a gap we might hypothesize a reading ויביא את הנער

In just one place (Genesis 4:1), Vulg = OG "God" where MT = YHwH. Jerome made a big noise about translating from Hebrew, not OG, so that might be a variation within Hebrew (though in some other places I think Vulg was influenced by OG).

I notice that #Latin Vulg seems to agree with MT in the redundancy:
et Tobias et Sanaballat conduxissent eum. Acceperat enim pretium, ut territus facerem
And Tobiyah & Sanballat had hired him. For he received a price, that I might be terrified

Is there any good social history of writing in Canaan/Israel/Judah/Edom/Moab/Ammon before 500 BCE? (I'm not looking for Egypt or Mesopotamia.) How many people were reading and writing, in what contexts, for what purposes?

Today we had to discuss Christian supremacy, christofascism, antisemitism and anti-Judaism and why we weren't discussing Jesus in a course entitled "Interpreting the #HebrewBible in Context."

Critics of the longer OG reading may suspect it of being a pastiche of phrases from elsewhere in chapter 1, and of being redundant (how many times does the sacrifice get slaughtered?), of violating lectio brevior and lectio dificilior.

Now I will complain that the different verse numerations (usually chapter break placement, but sometimes different verse divisions) is an obstacle to computational comparison of the Hebrew Bible with translations.

The OG document analysis might view 2:15-18 as an insertion by the author of Genesis 3, and surprisingly chapter 2 can be read without 2:15-18, but those verses are required by 3:1-5, 11.
