I started humming Highwaymen when I got back to the hotel, and I think that's basically where I'm at right now: Resurrection is the Chinese movie aesthetic version of Highwayman the country song. This is very possibly a reference that will only make sense to me

So it's like, yes, it's a long path for anyone to achieve true fulfillment, but white folks (esp. men) get a paved road to travel on and everyone else gets a rocky dirt path plagued by highwaymen and pit traps and "guards" who are there to protect the path not you.

Jack was heavily inspired by the highly romanticised 18thC highwaymen that used to prowl our many forested roads here in England. Ravens are also really important to our culture, famously inhabiting the Tower of London, so I guess I sprinkled that in too! They are also highly antisocial—a true Brit.
