I have never seen this image before, but it is striking! #historyofanimals
In this amazing assemblage, hunters barbarously slaughter wildlife until, in center, wildlife turns on them and metes out well-deserved, gruesome justice. Painted in 1647 by Paulus Potter, whose day is today.

Hey #historyofanimals folks, check out this fascinating story about Winston Churchill's platypus. I can't wait to ask my students about this line: "History is totally dependent on who's telling the story." H/T @dael.bsky.social 🗃️

When I teach #historyofanimals, I love discussing Jon Coleman's argument in "Vicious" about the shift in some humans' ideas about wolves from vermin to valuable. Today's NYT article about San Francisco's Coyotes might be good to assign next year. 🗃️

“An Immense World” by @edyong209.bsky.social stimulates new questions! For example, this story about feathered dinosaur fossils, made me wonder what uses feathers served beyond flight. Our understanding of animals has changed so much over time! #historyofanimals www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/s...

If you‘re watching Eurovisioon and wondering about Laika: she was a captured Moscow stray. The Soviets sent her into space in 1957 aboard Sputnik 2. She was sent in space to die, which she did, after overheating, hours into the flight, on the craft's fourth orbit. The craft‘s cooling system failed.
