30th June 1894: Tower Bridge in London officially opened by the future King Edward VII
The need for a new crossing downstream of London Bridge due to increased commercial activity and urban growth had been recognised by the middle of the 19th century. However, any new structure would still have to allow tall-masted ships to access the Pool of London docks, making a conventional fixed bridge unsuitable. In 1876, the Special Bridge or Subway Committee was formed to find a solution. After reviewing more than 50 proposals, a design by city architect Horace Jones and engineer John Wolfe Barry was selected in 1884. Their proposal combined elements of a suspension bridge with a bascule (or drawbridge) system, which could be raised to allow ships to pass. Construction began in 1886, using over 11,000 tons of steel in the framework. This was then clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone to give the bridge a Gothic appearance in keeping with the nearby Tower of London. The...
