Even raised a hornworm into a moth before releasing. If you're open to DMs and interested I'll try to get some pics together and send your way!

Much smaller but the same color as the hornworm, this inch long caterpillar 🐛 of a Cloudless sulfur butterfly is blending very well with its host plant. (Popcorn cassia, in the senna family)

Hornworm update
Either it is growing fast or I under estimated the size earlier. Clearly it is bigger than my index finger and still hungry! Chomp chomp What a unit! #invertes

Hornworm update -
1- the same big cat 🐛 from the last couple days in pretty much the same spot - munching on a leaf
2- a different cat! Pulling some sort of Hoodini act, I’ve been looking for others and hadn’t seen any. This 1 is not small!
Rustic Sphinx moth caterpillars (probably). #invertes 🌿

*She blinks, teething the antler gently. Then she nods meekly.*
That’s kind of you, to care for them that way… I don’t know much about what it’s like to hunt. It sounds…
*Periwinkle settles on Stern’s chest, closing his eyes to digest his hornworm.*
Does it ever scare you?

Status check on our medium size hornworm - oh, no longer medium, I’d say close to as big as it’s going to get! Index finger size. And it will need to move to another location in the Desert Willow, leaves are getting sparse!Soon will be time to pupate. Possibly a Rustic Sphinx moth. #invertes SoCal

Nature’s horror movie playing out on my native laurel today: one poor hornworm, covered in tiny white wasp cocoons, eaten alive from the inside. Brutal… but effective... #gardening #weird #pestcontrol

It's nice to see one not covered in the parasitic wasp larva. I know it's the circle of life, but that bit of it freaks me out. I feel so bad for the hornworm!

The first time I saw one of these IRL I was so freaked out, but then I realized the wasps had taken out the hornworm that wanted to eat my tomatoes so now I am always glad to see them.

*She chews slowly, thoughtfully… Periwinkle is already gaping at Stern, awaiting another hornworm.*
You know…I think year round? I’ve really only mastered them for about a year now! I use them more in the spring and summer with all my flowers. Maybe I could practice growing autumn veggies?!

Hornworm! I've seen this IRL, it's cool but also kinda spooky at normal scale.
Spookiest decoration at the "Zoo Goes Boo" event at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids? Giant model of parasitoid wasps hatching from cocoons affixed to their caterpillar host.

Possibly the same medium size hornworm from a few days ago. It is on the same Desert Willow about 20 feet from where I saw it last, as the crow flies but as the caterpillar crawls maybe 60-70 feet! Hang tough, little dude, I hear some rain might be on the way in a couple days. #invertes

Went out to the garden to grab a cucumber for lunch. Found a mother effin tomato hornworm hanging out. So both me and one of my local ravens got a snack, which is nice.

Found this fairly big dead moth out on my walk today. Turns out to be the Carolina sphinx, or as larvae tobacco hornworm or Goliath worm. Not sure what killed it, maybe the cold?

Speaking of caterpillars, just when I thought I’d seen the last one for this year, a smallish hornworm, probably a Rustic Sphinx moth caterpillar. 🐛
They seem to do well on our Desert Willow tree. This one is under two inches, at the moment! 🦋🌿 #invertes

*He picks up the jar of worms and examines it closely.* Hornworm… *he picks one out and hands the wriggling bug to Periwinkle. Sterns stomach grumbles and he hopes Blu doesn’t hear.*

Today would have been Frank Herbert's birthday, so I am celebrating with this merchant shinplaster from the Panic of 1837 era (actually the 1839 downturn). It features an amazing and unique vignette of a goliath worm, aka tobacco hornworm. W. Morris, Eatonton, GA, $1, Dec 17, 1839. 🗃️
