This past week has been a very difficult one for healthcare headlines in Manitoba. Among the stories was one that struck painfully close to home: one of our own nurses, Michelle, lost her mother to a system that is breaking under the weight of chronic neglect. On the day her mother was left waiting more than 30 hours for care, Michelle went to work so her patients wouldn’t be left without a nurse. The ethical and moral dilemmas nurses are forced to navigate every single day are adding up. No one should have to choose between caring for their patients and caring for their family. And yet, this is the reality far too many of our members face in a system stretched far beyond safe limits. But in the midst of this heartbreak, there was something else—something that gives me hope. My inbox, our phone lines, and our social media channels were flooded with messages from the public offering condolences, outrage, and unwavering support. People saw Michelle’s pain. They saw nurses’ pain. And they stood with us. That support matters. It tells us that Manitobans understand what nurses are up against, and they expect better—from government, from leadership, and from the system itself. This week, I sat down with the Minister of Health alongside CFNU President Linda Silas. We were clear: nurses need legislated nurse-to-patient ratios to feel confident in the care they provide and safe in the work they do. Nothing less will stabilize our system. As Linda said to the Minister, “The Speech from the Throne gave you an important mandate on patient safety initiatives, and we look forward to working with you on them.” We will hold them to that mandate. I will not lower my standards, nor my expectations, for what can be accomplished when we commit to truly looking after the people who look after us all. Manitoba Nurses Union facebook post: Last week, I learned of something deeply troubling that underscores how far we still have to go in creating a safe environment for staff. One of our nurses shared a distressing experience. When she entered the front entrance of CancerCare MB (CCMB), she was scolded for using it and told to return to the west side door, which is hidden, where the view is obstructed, and people sleep alongside the door. It’s really unsafe, as you have to walk right up to the door to see if anyone is hiding in that space. At least at the front door, security is right there. A month ago, we posted about a CCMB nurse who was slapped across the face by a stranger while walking from the parkade to her workplace. And recently, a CCMB visitor had to guard the front doors from three people trying to push their way past security. Patients and visitors should NEVER have to act as security when seeking care. "When I expressed my concerns about the ongoing physical and sexual assaults on campus," said the nurse, "I was told, ‘Well, that’s not how it works, you cannot come in this entrance.'" This is disgusting. After being told repeatedly by leadership that safety is a top priority, I find this response insulting and yet another blow to the culture we’re trying to build. In an email sent to CCMB management, the nurse asked why the front entrance couldn’t be used, especially given the escalating safety concerns. Management’s response: “Friendly reminder: please remember that the main entrance is reserved for patients only. Staff members are kindly asked to use the west side staff door when entering and exiting the building.” This isn’t good enough. The system we rely on to keep us safe should be working with us, not against us. Staff should not be made to feel more vulnerable when raising legitimate safety concerns. This cannot continue. We don't need more empty responses or misplaced blame.
