that individuation precedes differenciation in principle, that every differenciation presupposes a prior intense field of individuation.

In their new article, Smit & Buekens argue Searle’s theory of institutional reality misfits individuation in the social sciences: institutions track rules—yielding disjunctive kinds that turn into odd legal pronouncements like “Somaliland isn’t a country”👇 philarchive.org/rec/SMIISA-5 #philsky #HPS
J. P. Smit & Filip Buekens, Is Somaliland a Country? An Essay on Institutional Objects in the Social Sciences - PhilArchive
Searle claims that his theory of institutional reality is particularly suitable as a theoretical scheme of individuation for work in the social sciences. We argue that this is not the case. ...

And it's rough, because balancing the underlying duality — intellect vs emotion, left- vs right-brain, Magician vs High Priestess, etc — makes sense and is useful to reason about in context of Jungian individuation, but he's so hung up on "woman do be shopping, also gay + trans people make no sense"

I have noticed more progress in my own shadow work/individuation journey after experimenting with the whole active imagination visualization route instead of relying solely on journal prompts and intellectualizing the shadow and the subconscious with my conscious mind.

"...excessive individuation leads to suicide, insufficient individuation has the same effects. When man has become detached from society, he encounters less resistance to suicide in himself, and he does so likewise when social integration is too strong."

The individuation process does not just happen to individual human beings and isolation, it happens to the entire cosmos through these individuals. #bookchatweekly

Neurosis is in a way a positive symptom. It shows that something wants to grow; it shows that that person is not right in his or her present state and if growth is not accepted then it grows against you and produces what might be called a negative individuation~Marie-Louise von Franz

I had never seen this but thank you, it’s so clear. Everyone is ‘other’ to an individual (as long as individuation from mother is successful) I think the terrible first step is considering others to be ‘lesser’ and from then onto ‘not like me so not quite human’. (Because I am my gauge of human?)

Introversion wirkt dagegen als stabilisierendes Resonanzfeld, das Harmonie und innere Ordnung in kollektiven Systemen erhält.🖖

i haven't read it in a long time so i probably can't speak to the finer details nor promise i endorse every single thing about it lol. but the central premise, which confounds strict boundedness of selfhood without denying individuation, and acknowledges co-substantiation, rings true for me

they will be who
they will be,
no lofty ideals
parsed into
bite-sized axioms
digestible to the
smallest child
with the least
diverse gut biome
will change them,
& the bone-deep
despair of futility
dug out the marrow
of my patience—
but i am no different
I am a slave
to individuation

Reflecting
"You cannot individuate
without loss."
I'm feeling
That the greater
our losses in life,
And the depth at which
we allow ourselves to
experience them,
(perhaps the greater
our grief)
The greater the nature
of our individuation
(and initiation
experiences)
may be
What do you think?
🙏 #Grief

“…this is a form of social life you're supposed to outgrow, not hallow.”
Well put.
And works perfectly to describe libertarianism as well — a *temporary* horror of community/familial authority being an understandable phase of youthful individuation, meant to be surpassed, never lingered upon.

Je eher die Individuation über Identitätsfragen hinauswächst, desto erbaulicher wird der Selbstbezug gegenüber Fehlbarkeiten.
