Totally not the point but my daughter did a research project in middle school trying to track whether topological genus tracks evolutionary complexity. Spoiler: It doesn’t, and furthermore insects have wildly varying and frequently unknown topological genera.

It was truly such an honour to conduct my MSc research at a place as prestigous as the @pirbrightinst.bsky.social As thanks for hosting me, I decided to draw the team's favourite insects as bookmarks for them.
Looking forward to being able to correspond with Pirbright in the future!

I'm going to assume that you are making a "vampire bat" joke - but bat nerds will always take any opportunity to make it a teachable moment - so here you go! Big Browns are insectivorous - they only eat insects (maybe sometimes spiders) but no blood. 1/n

I think this is something called a "devil's coach-horse beetle" and I simply didn't know we had insects built like that in Ireland.

I have a question for you! My followers!
What's an animal you admire and COULD keep, but probably won't?
For me the answer to that question is snakes. Their sleek appearance is beautiful, and the But, simply put, frogs, insects, & geckos are more my speed.

One thing to mention: Farmers HAVE to plant soybeans on some of their lands. Even if they know for a fact they can't sell it. It's part of crop rotation to keep insects from eating everything.
So next year, they'll plant soybeans knowing for a fact the crops will not be sold.

If he's hanging out all the way up there, he's likely eating the smaller insects that would annoy you, or worse, bite you. Or he fell out of some birds mouth in a narrow escape...

It'll be quick energy for him. Hope he doesn't get hooked, lol. He should still forage for his usual insects, berries, etc.

I feel very lucky it is not only my yard but the neighbors on both sides of me have mature trees as well.
Each lot is 5000 ft.² and I really feel that that is about what you need 15,000 ft.² of tree canopy to get some of the birds that live up in the trees and eat spiders and insects

So lucky to spot this guy. They hide well in the grass! It’s a Rabid Wolf Spider. It is named for its fast, frantic movements, not because it has rabies. This species is harmless to humans and beneficial in gardens as it preys on insects. I’m amazed it was still long enough for me to capture this.

what is the best way to found an Asset you are looking for, for your game? I'm trying to find some insects for my game (I know I had models in a prior post but they were from PizzaPoly Great site) Do people just commission others on Fiverr or is there a trick that developers should know? #Unity3D

One of God's many creatures that I absolutely enjoy watching. We grow many plants in garden with no other purpose than to attract beneficial insects.

She was a cautious spider, but as I checked on her more I learned how to avoid startling her. I appreciate being able to watch her build her web and feed on trapped insects in the early hours of the morning. I hope I get to see more of them again next year.
