Viktor on the bassoon Photo is of a man on a stage playing a bassoon, another wind instrument, but fairly larger and bulkier than the clarinet. Usually rests leaned forward in the player’s grip. If straightened so that the top of it lines up with the top of the player’s head, it would end around the player’s knees. A thin metal mouthpiece juts out from the top half of the instrument.

He gestures at his rounded stomach, at the idle wrench in Viktor’s hand. “Making me do all the work, huh?” Such ease in those eyes, those beloved crow’s feet…and Viktor sways, all dizzied joy at this unforeseen gift: Growing into old age—old age!—surrounded by his partner, their children, in a sunny glade next to their cottage by a stream. He careens close, cups Jayce’s face, and kisses him deeply. When they part, Jayce’s gaze is damp above a tremulous grin. Jayce will understand, Viktor had thought. And he was right. III. “…Time to crank it?” Viktor finally quips. Jayce kisses his palm. “Time to crank it.” Together, they grasp the final lever, and push down. Their invention unfurls… …And out bursts a stream of multicolored mechanical butterflies. They flit and float and dance along the glade, swoop around and around, before finally soaring into a tumbling parade across the sky. Below the display, their daughter shrieks, the picture of delight. Wordlessly, the two scientists cling to each other within a sidelong embrace… …Until at last, the sun dips low, and it is time for the four of them to go home.

It’s the weekend and they start a scary movie marathon, snuggled tightly together under Ximena’s handwoven quilts. *Child’s Play.* “Classic,” Viktor observes. *Saw X.* “Epic bad luck,” Jayce declares. *The Substance.* “Non-traditional,” Jayce notes. “But the sound design is *amazing*—” “—and the blood shooting everywhere at the end is *FUNNY*,” Viktor finishes, nodding. They are cozy in their fuzzy sweaters and their fuzzy socks, and they cuddle closer, and closer, and closer still. When Monstro Elisasue finally appears onscreen, Monstro ViktorJayce stares back, enraptured, one great big lump of scientist and scientist and quilt. Cuddling turns into kissing turns into Viktor’s hand down Jayce’s pants turns into Jayce squirming and squirming for more. Skin to skin all along their bodies, intertwined and they don’t know where one begins or ends— Except for their fuzzy socked feet. “I feel a little silly,” Jayce pants out despite himself. “We are silly together,” Viktor points out before he bites his chin and Jayce stops talking again. They kiss and sigh and touch and laugh and Viktor finally, finally slides into him. Jayce moans and wraps his legs around his waist… And Viktor feels Jayce’s fuzzy wizard socks brush against his ass and Jayce feels it too and they make eye contact while Jayce pets one ass cheek with his foot and they burst out laughing all over again.
