The first time Jeongin makes it rain, he doesn't realize it's him. It's his fifth birthday and his older brother had run off with the two friends their mother had allowed him to invite, and his baby brother had cried when he realized that he wasn't going to be able to open any of Jeongin's birthday presents. Jeongin, at his big old age of five years old, has realized that this is what this life is going to be from now on: his big brother ignoring him for friends his own age, and his baby brother drawing all the attention just because he's the baby. He's upset, but more than that, he's sad. It isn't fair, but what can Jeongin do about it? He's five; he can't throw a temper tantrum to get his way. He's too old for that. The clouds pour in so fast that no one has a chance to grab the presents or cover the cake before the rain comes down. His parents end up taking the whole group of kids out for bungeoppang and yuja-cha, fretting over late winter colds. The outdoor party had been Jeongin's idea. It isn't for another fifteen years that he realizes the rain was because of him, too. He'll never tell anyone, but Chan is Jeongin's favorite roommate. Chan steps in to take care of all the little annoyances that Jeongin never realized bothered him, from scheduling things to organizing the pantry to sorting through their laundry and making sure the right pieces always go to the dry cleaners. In return, Jeongin does his best to give as much as he takes. He wakes ten minutes before Chan's alarms so he can pull him out of sleep as gently as possible. He checks on him when Chan hits a stride in his home studio, switching out old water bottles with fresh ones, cutting up the fruit that Chan's bought and leaving it at his elbow, just like his mom used to. From home to rehearsal to various performance venues, Chan looks at him with bright, happy eyes, like Jeongin is his greatest dream come true, and Jeongin will do anything to make sure that never stops. Anything but this. Jeongin takes one step back, then another. Backs away until he bumps into the couch and almost falls to the ground, just barely catching himself on the arm. "Is that..." Chan clears his throat, glances behind Jeongin to the front door, "is that really what you think of me?" Jeongin can't speak. No, it's not. Yes, it is. He loves Chan and but he ne makes Jeongin crazy, makes Jeongin want to scream and tie him to a bed so Jeongin can make sure he's eating and sleeping and being taken care of. But no, because that's a crazy thought, and Jeongin loves being taken care of Chan, too. Loves that Chan will stay later at dinner when Jeongin's drunk too much, sipping on a glass of water. Loves that Chan will eat whatever Jeongin puts in front of him, even after Jeongin snuck in more gochugaru than he knows Chan can handle. Loves that Chan had simply laughed it off, even as he sweat and cried through the heat. Chan blinks, shakes his head like he does when he's trying not to cry. He brings his fists to his eyes, knuckling at them harshly. Jeongin's heart is breaking, and he still can't speak, can't even swallow against lump in his throat for making his hyung, his roommate, his partner in so many things, cry. He has to get out of here. He has to, before he brings a storm upon what has been a beautiful, clear night. Clear enough that you could see the stars, if they lived anywhere else but the center of the city. He pushes himself off the couch, distracted when he sees the water slide of his hand. When he goes to wipe his face, hoping to catch his tears before they fall, he's interrupted by Chan's voice yet again. "Jeongin?" He can't look at Chan, he can't. But there's something in his voice. Like the hurt, the betrayal, the sadness, have all dropped away. There's something else there now. Something that sounds strangely like wonder. Jeongin blinks as more water comes down, enough that he knows its not his tears, enough that it slicks his hair down against his skull. He knows he looks unfortunately round, like he took a jump into a pool with all his clothes on. He knows the water sloshing around his feet means that they'll have to get a special vacuum in here soon, unless they want to flood their downstairs neighbor. He knows all of this, but he can't focus on any of that. Not when he finally raises his eyes to lock on to Chan's. Chan's eyes are bright and shining. Pearls in the sea, rain drops catching the sunlight. The water falling around Jeongin slows, stops. He isn't sad any more.
