A jökulhlaup takes place at Grímsvötn .... Anyone who knows this problem will be a little worried - if the lake empties, the pressure on the magma chamber will be released and an eruption COULD occur ....

8.3 km north of Hábunga, there was another M 2.6 earthquake at a depth of 100 m. This, like the M 3.0, was in the area of water cauldrons 13 and 14. Due to the "50:50 chance" that this is not just a preparation for the next jökulhlaup ....

jökulhlaup: cool word, fun to say, has an umlaut so it's metal, descriptive because jökul = glacier and hlaup = flood, and also the onomatopoeia. Hlaup sounds like someone vomiting!

We probably have another eruption already, but it's not where we were expecting, but under a glacier so we will probably just have a lot of meltwater run off, or what we like to call a jökulhlaup.

I've had cats named Argle Bargle, Asparagus, Opossum Baby, Tsunami, Virvelvind, Typhoon, Jokulhlaup, Haboob (wind and water events), Herbert, Sherbert, Zerbert, Derbert (strays that adopted our yard), and Terry. These are their Christian names--they were called long "e" shortenings of some sort.

🌊The jökulhlaup is expected to be minor, originating from Skeiðarjökull and flowing into Gígjukvísl. Though small, this event is closely monitored due to its potential implications. #jökulhlaup #iceland

9/ ... which are glacial outburst floods, sudden megafloods caused by eruptions underneath ice caps, which can wash away roads & bridges like childs' toys. Not to too fine a point on it, but the entire canyon Ásbyrgi (by Jökulsárgljúfur) was carved by just a handful of jökulhlaup in the past 10k yr.

Some people use the word jökulhlaup to describe all kinds of glacial floods, while others say jökulhlaup only describes the volcanic subglacial lake kind. I tend toward the latter and use GLOF to describe the more general category, but I'm not strict about how others use the terms!
