Kamaʻāina is a word describing Hawaii residents regardless of their racial background, as opposed to kanaka which means a person of Native Hawaiian ancestry. A kamaʻāina may be considered 2 b someone who lives in Hawaii, or may be expanded to include people who once lived there but have moved away.

You're right. Born and raised in Hawaii too. (Stuck in Floriduh since 2012). Trying to explain to people that I am FROM Hawaii but I'm not Hawaiian can be frustrating. I'm a Kamaaina who is Puerto Rican (also have to explain why I don't speak Spanish) 🙄

This kamaʻāina has never missed living in Hawaii more than I do now. Growing up there, we all seemed fairly oblivious to mainland politics. Some say Ignorance is Bliss and Once you Call Hawaii your Home, it shall Ever Be So!

Took us 2 yrs to leave HI. No comparison anywhere. Finally came down to sun vs water. Chose water over sun, rain and all! WA fit our lifestyle. No regrets. They say, “You can take the kamaaina out of Hawaii, but can’t take Hawaii outta the kamaaina no how!” So true. On my way to NO KINGS. Aloha!
