So far beyond difficult To resist another gulp Come to think about it, something she had done so quite a few times, putting an end to whatever that was would be the best for both parties involved; of that Kôyô had no doubt. And yet, both kept seeking each other’s company. Well, ‘company’ might not be a full-fledged euphemism, but also didn’t properly explain their relationship at all. Long story short, Verlaine and her interacting in pretty much any context which didn’t involve official mafia work always ended up in sparring, a makeout session that most times than not went way further than that… or both, usually but not exclusively in that order. So there they were once again, with him being the one straddling her over the bed for a slight change, in the process of untying her obi before she grabbed the lapels of his jacket and pulled Verlaine closer for a kiss. “Do your best,” Kôyô said right after, as the obi’s knot got fully undone and she got rid of his jacket. “Or I might stop visiting.” “I could say the same, you know?” As it usually happened, since taunting each other like that was how their previous quarrels tended to die down. Or escalate as they got intimate, that was a possibility too. “Since you wouldn’t enter here anyway if I don’t want to.” Anyway, both talked just to talk, to get a reaction out of the other, and she knew that; if there was a constant between them, it was how getting entangled was going to be the end result no matter what. I need your help, I can’t fight this forever I know you’re watching, I can feel you out there Katai was trembling, both due to cold and fear; struggling to breath and with his teeth clattering, moving seemed like a titanic task right then and there, so it stood to reason he was going to remain there till he could either put himself together or someone came to his aid. And the possibility of any of them happening in a short term timeframe were… … Apparently higher than he had expected, given how barely a moment after thinking exactly that, Katai felt the familiar warmth of his futon being wrapped over his shoulders. Then, when he had the cloth secured by clutching onto it for dear life with one hand, the other got swiftly grabbed by the person who had helped him, guiding him away in a quick but easy to follow pace. Also, surprisingly enough, the relief striking his whole body didn’t wash away when he finally noticed who said person was: No other than the Port Mafia’s volatile bomber-- well. As if he didn’t know him by name at that point. “You looked like you needed an exit.” Kajii said, technically unprompted. But Katai was sure the question was written all over his face. “So I’m providing! Besides, no offense, but you’re not made for being at the front like, at all.” Despite everything, Katai laughed a little. “None taken, it’s true.”

Atsushi had braided the longest strand of his hair, which was also now held back by a hairpin Jun’ichirô had lent him; something that finished his look for the upcoming party and kept hair at bay while he cooked. With him were Kunikida, Kenji, Jun’ichirô and Kyôka, and their team was almost done with all the dinner’s food. Meanwhile Yosano, Sigma and Naomi were finishing setting up the table, and Ranpo and Dazai had been tasked with making sure no decoration was out of place or at risk of falling off… in theory. Also, Bram was supposed to bring Aya any minute, but Atsushi had no idea if he would be joining them too or was going on a Christmas Eve date. And speaking of dates… “The president should also be here soon.” Naomi said, passing by to get more forks and spoons. “He said he had an appointment, but we all know which kind.” “Yeah.” He heard Yosano mutter from the other room, without adding anything else. Atsushi himself sort of wished he had a Christmas date too, but it didn’t really have to be on Christmas Eve anyway, nor would he change that one night’s plans for anything in the world. Quite the opposite, after eighteen years with no family gatherings like that, he was so damn glad to be there. “It’s nice, right?” Sigma told him, as if they had just read his mind or used his ability on him. “To spend tonight with everyone.” To be fair, Sigma was a slightly different case than him, since they apparently had plans set for the next day already… but Atsushi also knew how commenting on it may or may not kickstart the teasing coming from all sides, and he would rather wait a bit for that. “This is terrible.” Verlaine had barely finished speaking when she nodded. “You should have done this way sooner. You know that, right?” Kôyô said, letting out a deep sigh without even trying to downplay it. Why would she? Shopping right before Christmas was the absolute worst, since everywhere was filled to the brim with people with either not enough time or little to zero organization skills… and, obviously, crowds made the experience even less enjoyable. And just if that wasn’t annoying already, it had to be with him. It had to be with him, plus both making sure they wouldn’t lose sight of the other and still having that man under some sort of surveillance (as if that was needed at that point) meant they had to mostly walk with their arms linked. Besides, playing the part of a stressed couple would make keeping a low profile easier. “Should I remind you I can’t exactly come and go as I please?” No, since (again) that was partly the reason Kôyô was there in the first place. “Besides, you jumped to my aid when I said I wanted to give Chûya a gift.” “That’s… true.” In fact, Chûya was also partly the reason Kôyô was there in the first place, and the main motivator no less. If there was one thing that was making itself shown right then, with the three of them exchanging presents by the Christmas tree Poe had set up at his place… was how wrapping presents neatly was definitely not Mushitarô’s strong suit. “Don’t worry, Mushi-kun. I gave up after a while and got mine professionally wrapped, after all.” Edgar said, and it was indeed some consolation. Not much, though, since Ranpo had managed to do his perfectly, because he could do almost anything if he actually bothered and whatnot. Meanwhile, Mushitarô’s own presents for his boyfriends looked terrible in comparison, since he had been too prideful to either ask for help or get them done the same way Poe had. Well, at least the contents would make up for a rather terrible presentation. He hoped. “Chill, Mushi-kun. We’re gonna love them!” As if he could hear his thoughts, or actually due to how his poker face was as bad as his skill for wrapping presents, Ranpo instantly assured him. “I’m very chill, tsk.” He replied, effectively showing that… Well, he wasn’t. That was his first Christmas with them, and his first Christmas with romantic plans at all in a very long time; of course he was nervous! “Ranpo-kun’s right, we will.” Poe then added, reaching out to take his hand, a gesture Ranpo quickly imitated. And despite everything, once both were holding him like that, his doubts started to dissipate. “Thanks.” Mushitarô managed to say after a while, more choked up than he would have liked and with a soft smile on his face.

“Hold me?” He asked, in barely a whisper. And, just as quickly, Arthur Rimbaud got his wish granted in the form of his partner wrapping himself around him in a tight hug. Tight and warm, exactly what he was looking for. “Thanks, dear.” He answered, his voice muffled as he promptly buried his face in the crook of Verlaine’s neck, hugging him back with intensity. Blankets were nice, but that… that was special in the best of ways. Because nothing was better than sharing body heat with someone else, especially him, and because… oh, to hold each other so tenderly, them who also were capable of so much violence. “No need to thank me, I do it gladly.” Was the response he got, as Rimbaud felt Verlaine’s head moving to rest on top of him. Silence then fell for a while, since there was no need for words; both were more than happy to stay just like that. And an ‘I love you’ made its way into his throat, too, but it didn’t exit it. Instead, the words were released in the form of Morse code softly tapped against Verlaine’s back. “How does that taste?” “Honestly? Terrible.” Verlaine quickly replied, once he had swallowed. “But at least it’s not poison, so I give you that.” “You seem pretty sure that it’s not poison.” Fyodor countered with a catty smile. “I am, yes. Perks of the job.” Was all he offered in return in the realm of the current topic. Dostoyevsky wasn’t there to have a conversation about food, that was for sure, and he wouldn’t entertain small talk with someone like him. “Anyway, what do you want?” “Can’t I greet one of the Port Mafia’s executives just because I feel like it?” “Because you feel like it? You?” If there was something Verlaine was more than well aware of how the person in front of him, it was how he never stitched without a thread, and underestimating even the smallest word could be fatal. Ace had made that mistake, the dumbass, and he wouldn’t be following his footsteps. Especially when there was more intel on Dostoyevsky now, even if still scarce. Unravelling the mystery that Fyodor was could only be a task for geniuses or fools, and despite his own smarts and boldness, Verlaine wouldn’t count himself as neither. No matter how tempting it may be. “This ought to be on your record.” Kôyô said, only half serious, and despite that Verlaine quickly offered him a scowl. “This was your fault now, so don’t try to pin it all on me.” Being completely honest with herself, albeit only mentally, Kôyô had to admit it tended to be both their faults more often than not. But, of course, she wouldn’t say that to Verlaine’s face so easily. “I’m by no means the one that is still under surveillance, just in case.” Was her response instead, scoffing. And, instead of escalating the conversation even further and into a full-fledged argument, what those words got from him as a reaction was laughter… which, to her surprise, sounded rather nice. “Oh? So you’re going to take advantage of that, perhaps?” Verlaine’s words were filled with sarcasm, accompanied with a bit of venom but bigger amounts of amusement. And those only became more noticeable when she pushed him back into the seat both had been occupying before getting… interrupted, then ‘climbed’ to his lap, with him offering no actual resistance. “Last time I checked we were both executives.” Kôyô said, simply and plainly. After all and at that point, all that talk was only part of an inside charade.

to each their own but in my case precisely the interest i have in koulaine is the possibility of "i don't like you and you don't like me but that's good bcs if we don't get attached we won't get to grieve /like that/ again" kinda hookup buddies that ends up as bad as you'd expect
