The fire hydrant on the corner of my block is where most of the neighborhood seems to put their things they don't want anymore but feel guilty throwing away. Today, somebody has left a lampshade on top of the hydrant.

I DID IT, I MADE THIS SPACE CUTE!! we’re going to frame the puzzle and hang it up (+ more art), and ofc still need a lampshade for the lamp but i’m feeling so pleased

Full-page advert in today’s Times (of London) Magazine. A besuited, smiley pharmacist with a lampshade on her head in a living room tells another smiling lady, “I can diagnose that UTI, Jaya.” Bottom text reads “for walk-in healthcare, you’re never too far from a pharmacist. Boots. With you. For life.” Context, UTI diagnosis is far from straightforward at point of care, even if tests are run. The dipstick is not very accurate, and even the midstream urine culture can underestimate genuine infection.

Front view of my skelly gorl, a Warhammer miniature for Age of Sigmar. Tan background, the top of a lampshade, a shelf that has my ball python, and a black bowl with fake plant. Yes my nails were painted! My girlfriend and I went to an lgbt+ event last night and we got all dressed up. :3 Is this Burning Legion from WoW enough? A side view of the miniature. Golden Griffon is a citadel dry paint that’s really weird and chunky. i most likely didn’t use the paint correctly but still used it for the axe blade lol The backside of my miniature. Showing off the cape, behind the shield, and long tail bone. I did use the back of the shield to see how Hexwraith Flame would look directly on black, not the best but gave me an idea to add a layer on the cape before applying it.

Some struggle to see the Praxis in absurdity & humor, and for many who see it ,it is difficult to express. Think of it this way: the absurdity of the costumes denies fascists the solemn gravitas they crave. It hangs a lampshade on their lies of violence & riots. You can’t be a “savior” against THAT.

This is also interesting because for over a year now, @gaylore.lesbian.cat has been talking about lamp shading as a literary technique used to acknowledge when there is a plot gap or inconsistency in the narrative. When this is done in a meta way it’s called “hanging a clock on it”
lampshading is a literary technique that is used to acknowledge, in various ways, when there is a plot gap or something incongruous or contradictory in the narrative. in stories with a serious tone, it should be used sparingly to help suspend the readers' disbelief. but in stories with a sarcastic or meta tone, it can be used to add to the layers of irony at play. In addition to simply using self-awareness to point out issues, lampshading can sometimes also take the opportunity to answer or justify how the situation makes sense. For example, to defuse readers' skepticism or criticism of an event, a character might share further information after the fact, such as explaining unknown motivations: Depending on circumstances, lampshading can create moments that come off as winking, hilarious, clever (or too-clever-for-its-own-good), meta, lazy, handwaving away weak writing, etc. So we need to understand when lampshading will help or hurt our writing and story. as many have pointed out, lampshading became more of a popular conversation topic after someone noticed this random arm grabbing a lampshade in stills from the lavender haze mv. you know, when she shows herself performing intimacy for the cameras with her BEARDed man while wearing lesbian flag shirt, interrupts her own scene to stare directly at the camera and then at the end pushes the walls of the house/set down. g her team are not just accidentally letting an image with a random arm pass by unnoticed. so if that gave us our first reference to lampshading, i think it's safe to assume it's being used for the latter, more meta and humorous purpose. when i was reading about these techniques online, i stumbled across the reddit comment on the top left about the difference between lampshading for pure plot consistency (like taylor's retconning dating narratives that never added up over the years) vs lampshading to wink at the skeptical audience, which can be called spotlighting. spotlighting of course made me think of the bare bulbs exploding in the karma mv. she walks a tightrope and plays both sides, but i felt a shift in that this summer when travis went on stage during ICDIWABH. at that point, in blatantly making travis a part of her brand's performance, it started to feel less like feeding both narratives and thus maintaining plot consistency and more about winking at the skeptics. and from there on, it's just gotten more and more on the nose. the lampshade is lifted and soon the bright bulb will shatter. and this is the best part like oh taylor i hope you see this and know im constantly in awe of your genius storytelling. lampshading in a meta way is also called "hanging a clock on it." and what necklace has taylor been wearing very frequently especially this year as everything has become more and more on the nose? check out these times when she's worn it including a swiftie talking about the clock related significance from a few months ago.
