He was only in his 50s when he played Kurosawa's version of Lear in Ran. Probably the greatest movie of all time. A magnificently theatrical performance, shot almost entirely on telephoto lenses

Part of the context was that Bangor Punta had been bought out in 1984 by Lear Siegler. Yes, the Lear jet people. Here's Frank Sinatra and his Lear Jet.

If you have not already seen “Ran,” I’d cancel your plans for this evening and remedy the oversight. Nakadai’s performance as King Lear is one for the ages. After first viewing it ages ago, I sat in stunned silence for a good twenty minutes.

Safe travels to Nakadai Tatsuya (1932-2025), the great, great Japanese actor of both film and stage, who disappeared into every role he played. It's hard to imagine any story of Japanese cinema without him.

RIP Tatsuya Nakadai.

He garnered more than 100 screen credits during a career spanning seven decades, but is perhaps best known internationally for his role in Ran, Akira Kurosawa’s 1985 epic inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear.

Watching this 1998 production of KING LEAR with Ian Holm (best Lear I’ve ever seen). Lear truly wants to be just dead enough to enjoy it (“while we unburdened crawl toward death”), and it occurs to me that this particular desire destroys an awful lot of people.

This bit in Justified where the quiet heavy brother to Wood Harris' character--who had previously said maybe 6 short lines across the whole season and a half--drops a King Lear quote and then goes off on an animated lengthy explanation of the plot and the reason he said it is a bit made to kill me

If you'd like to fall in love with Tatsuya Nakadai, here are other movies besides "Ran" that I highly recommend. He was a genius. He was a powerhouse. He could do calm and introspective. He could do psychopathic. He could do honorable and wounded. He was amazing. This one really hurts.

RIP
