okay wow, I just found that sometime in July this year, the libretro core for PS2 went from almost unusable to *really* good

it even supports supersampling down to native (something that PCSX2 is weirdly stubbornly against) so you can get a flawless vibe that's still way cleaner on modern screens

thank god for blastem because all the other high-accuracy genesis emulators are libretro only

With the libretro core version of Electroniq, I can finally easily load and play Acorn Electron games on my Android device (via RetroArch) using the touchscreen! 😎

The libretro cores come from Libretro/RetroArch themselves. They’ll usually have lr or ra in their file names. If you check readmes or websites they’ll usually tell you if it uses libretro cores unless they’re doing shady stuff. Standalones don’t use them and bizhawk uses its own stuff by default.

i think sharkey should add libretro support

Come help test KRetro, a libretro frontend for KDE! It's still basic, but functional now!

The easiest way is with the nightly flatpak (it has cores built in), just "flatpak install https://cdn.kde.org/flatpak/kretro-nightly/org.kde.kretro.flatpakref"

Or […]

Interestingly, adding another layer on top of that in the form of EmulationStation makes things nicer. That's how my goofy little handheld handles it. ES also can handle non libretro emulators too

Partially technical - they don't want to have to deal with requests for support with ancient versions, but also political - their age old hatred of libretro since they are the ones that made those old fossilised MAME versions.

The names I'm seeing behind the libretro github and the staff list I see on RA's site aren't matching at all? I'm down to be wrong about this, just want to know where else I should be looking. The Libretro github list was all I could find on them specifically.

as the owner of a couple Mariko rev Switches myself, I'm sure the Switch 2 will turn out to be a fine piece of hardware.

but visually the teaser model looks like a legally-distinct rip-off clone system that runs a janky Libretro frontend that stretches GBA games to 16:9 and stutters on the DKC port

It'll always feel like a massive step backwards so long as I need to fight with the implementation like this so often before I even get into gameplay.

It's a massive shame, since honestly I really like the *idea* of Retroarch and modular libretro cores, but the implementation remains a letdown.

It appears to be possible, if you're willing to mod your switch - and since you're willing to spend $400, I'm guessing you are.

tl;dr: you need to install Retroarch on your Switch, then install Citra aka Citra Core.

Tried to port Kronos - another Sega Saturn emulator that runs a lot faster than Mednafen for me, at least the libretro core does. However, I stopped mid-port and won't be continuing it:

Team Libretro (as far as I can tell from the list of team members on the github for Retroarch) are not the people behind Retroarch. Retroarch is one of many emulator front-ends that people can use with RA functionality.

Getting keyboard and audio working in the amd64 libretro core version of Electroniq went smoother than expected. Here is Flappy Bird in RetroArch with the Mega Bezel Amber shader 😎
