In short, we found 3 lncRNAs that ensure oocyte differentiation by condensing FBF-2, a protein that prevents meiosis entry. And yes, a homologous mechanism probably exists in mammals.

RNA-binding FBF proteins control germline stem cell differentiation. Here, the authors show that three long non-coding RNAs bind, condense, and thus inhibit FBFs to promote the transition of germline stem cells into meiosis.

3) Overall we annotated ~70% more transcript isoforms than our recent annotation of GRCz11.
4) Most of the increase is for additional isoforms of protein-coding genes, but the lncRNA count did increase from 8740 in the RS_2024_08 annotation of GRCz11 to 12,861 in GRCz12.

One especially interesting discovery:
In a 2022 study, researchers found a new lncRNA in the 3′UTR (tail end) of a gene called C5aR1 - which controls part of the immune response.
This lncRNA comes from an Alu element (a kind of repetitive DNA) and was only turned on during infection.
