My favorite part of this was learning the Vikings a) are the reason we have orange cats, and b) would keep a cat on longships sometimes

Vikings sailed to North America in/about 1,000. In their open longships. They established a village on the north shore of what is now Newfoundland where they stayed for some years. It's a Parks Canada exhibit; you can visit it! (We have; it's just incredible how tough these people were...)

Today is Leif Erikson Day.
The day celebrates the arrival of Erikson and the Vikings in what is now Canada around 1000 years ago. Based on the Vinland Sagas, it is believed that he founded the settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, located in Newfoundland and Labrador.

I like all of the detailed rivers, it looks like this is a map where traveling in longships is part of the campaign and this is to help you plot your routes inland and where you'll need to conduct any portages.

The jarl’s troops accustomed to the strife-assembly [BATTLE] like foxes to dogs, had cleared the outlying headland. Hjálmarr and I destroyed the longships with fire and embers when we got there.

Made a new comparison image with the new Gilden Sea longships - life is hard for the Gilden Sea pirates 😃 Imagine climbing that Great Junk from your glorified fishing boat, but if successful, your whole tribe is set for generations to come (ship stats in the comments)

Wulfstan II, archbishop of York, called on his entire Viking-blighted nation to fast for three days on bread, herbs and water starting #OTD in 1009. The aim: ‘that we may obtain God’s mercy and His compassion and that we may through His help withstand our enemies’. #medievalsky

I spent a great afternoon today with a friend exploring around the Reculver Towers, near Herne Bay, Kent. Somewhere I haven't visited for years. We even got to climb one of the towers! #ReculverTowers #Reculver #HerneBay #Kent #England

Haraldr (III) Sigurðsson, king of Norway, and Tostig Godwineson, former ealdorman in Northumbria, sailed up the River Ouse with a fleet of 300 ships #OTD in 1066. Before entering the Humber they had harried the Northumbrian coast, setting Scarborough ablaze. #medievalsky

As a Norwegian-American, I must say I’m really sick of all this white supremacist Valhalla bullshit. Most Viking Age Norwegians were not cruising around in longships pillaging & blood-eagling their enemies, unless by that you mean growing barley, cod fishing, & herding sheep.

2/ rings on the surface. A charcoal rock needled with cormorants became suddenly bare, and from the shore came the scalloped cry of an oyster-catcher, joined after a moment by others, Then the longships slid past, and the sounds died away.
