Mosses, like the lush green ones growing on the decaying stump (foreground), were among the first plants to colonise land >400 million years ago💡
They played a crucial role in creating the soil that allowed larger, more complex plants to thrive🌳

In the fairy tale "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm, the name "Rapunzel" actually refers to this plant.
It is mentioned that Rapunzel's mother craved the plant so much while pregnant, that her father went to steal it from a sorceress's garden 🧙‍♀️

Sth different from my wildlife posts, but I still got an photograph-related fun fact for you:
Amsterdam has over 165 canals, which aren't just for show. They were originally dug to drain the city's marshy land & were crucial for transport & trade!

One of my very first shots 📸🥳
Despite their name, Mute Swans aren't totally silent. They communicate with snorts, hisses, and soft grunts, especially between parents and cygnets. They just lack complex songs. Did you know? 🦢

While fish make up the majority of their diet, Grey Herons are known to eat a variety of other creatures, e.g. ducklings, rodents & amphibians.
Have you ever witnessed a grey heron hunting something unexpected?

The Japanese Rose's fruit (rosehips) pack 20-30x more vitamin C than oranges, and are often used in jams, marmalades, and teas💡
Have you ever tried rosehip jam, or would you like to?

This Red Shouldered Hawk caught a rodent about 15 feet in front of me and then flew ro this bird to have his luck.

It’s sad, but nature is brutal and unforgiving!
