I worked there for years (not an MP) and we'd regularly get all staff emails saying things like 'Speaker's car park has been cordoned off because chunks of masonry are falling into it, please find an alternative route through the Palace'.

I always think that's so interesting - the majestic/formal/intimidating thing is often "this looks expensive" and these days, good stonework and skilled masonry is expensive, so showing that off gives the "wowza" impression, while paint is cheap. Meanwhile, back in the day, paint is PRICY.
