I don’t know how many folks I’ve suggested Possession to. Historical metafiction at its zenith. Maud is canny, smart, fragile. She transforms as the trail of her ancestor reveals itself, giving her greater purpose and power. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

@mercurianmissy.bsky.social reminded me that I never posted my theater review piece I did for the Garlemald zine (which is still available to read, link in replies). I'm such a slut for metafiction and in universe media, it's sad. archiveofourown.org/works/73841626

I love metafiction, and i think this gets at something important: when humans write metafiction, it is always in a sense pointing *outside the text*
it makes frames visible to show the story is always limited, always taking place in a larger world that includes the reader, the author, and the text

I'm excited to share my piece in Los Angeles Review of Books @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social, which examines OpenAI's claims about ChatGPT's creative writing skills, Big Tech's weaponisation of grief and nostalgia, and the collapse of the academic humanities. lareviewofbooks.org/article/lite...

Nothing like making retroactive edits to retroactive edits in a fictional editorial, that make it look like someone isn't editing anything at all.

A Cat in the Brain isn't Fulci's worst film, but it is a mess, and nowhere near as shocking as it thinks it is. A little more imagination could have made this an unsettling piece of metafiction, but what we get is just frustrating and incoherent.

I have great admiration for Liz, and I think she does so many clever things in this game. I'm excited to read the final version, and I'm especially excited to play it and experience the dungeon while the metafiction sits at the back of my player's mind.

Historiographic metafiction (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histori...) is one possibility, as would argue that these kinds of novels tend to treat past and present in the way sf treats the future

there were some fun moments in Strange New Worlds S1 but jesus that finale was awful. I hope going forward there is no more metafiction stuff. just a total lack of self confidence in your own story

To be more specific, I've written a game (It's a tactics game at its heart with weird horror and metafiction elements) and I want to do some ambitious puzzles and stuff in layout!
I'm starting to think that I might get the best result by working with a publisher to make a professional layout happen

Lurking thought in my brain that I should try and team up with a publisher for this project.
Anyone know where to pitch a tactical TTRPG with a ~terrifying secret~?

#14: NOROI: THE CURSE isn't my favorite found footage, J-horror, or even Koji Shiraishi film, but it's a creepy and effective occult mystery that bridges the eras of investigating physical records / digital artifacts. Too much shaky cam in parts but the atmosphere, metafiction, and reveals are gold.

Serre is a very short, but very cute sapphic VN.
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a very unique "tarot builder", really cool story.
Metahorror Therapy Session is one of the most interesting explorations to predeterminism and metafiction I've read in a long while.
Library of Ruina is peak, but hard

one of my favorite jokes in metafiction is that the deuteragonist has a playbook move called Excalibur that gives them a magic weapon and the hero has a move called The Cooler Excalibur that gives them a cooler, more overpowered magic weapon than the deuteragonist's
