💀 Under one of the mounds that makes up the site is an extraordinary shrine dedicated to Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec Lord of the Underworld. The shrine was uncovered in the 1960s but has been largely overlooked by scholars.

Día de Muertos itself is a syncretized holiday of indigenous and Catholic beliefs. Catrinas also harken back to Mictēcacihuātl, the Lady of the Dead and Queen of Mitlan, who ruled alongside her husband, Mictlantecuhtli, the Lord of the Dead. (Note that these are Aztec/Nahuatl deities, not Mayan.)
