Ashley Hillman et al. served #LakeSuperior as a #ModelSystem for understanding #Cooling-mediated #LocalRefugia, found that disjunct arctic–alpine plants rely on cool shoreline temperatures but are restricted to highly exposed habitat under climate warming.

Study area at Lake Superior and location of documented disjunct arctic–alpine species. The lake is 563 km east to west and 258 km south to north with a maximum depth of 406 m. The lake is bordered by Ontario, Canada in the north, and in the south by Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan in the USA (see inset map). Species occurrence locations here are represented by life forms.
