A year ago, I noticed a high density of pips and a dearth of fixing in the Horror Cube, so I drafted a couple monocolor decks and trophied both.
This year, I tried a second color but still drafted a staggering number of pips. No clue if 12-8 mana was right, but it worked! 🏆 😄

I usually agree with your takes, but this video is just a long slippery slope argument. Also arguing that some hybrid cards are color pie breaks isn't true, unless you believe you know more about the color pie break than Magic designers? Hybrid cards are designed to be playable as monocolor. 1/2

i don't really think this argument holds together... it rests on wotc printing a bunch of strong and egregious color pie breaks, but if that's what they want to do surely they don't need hybrid mana—couldn't one just as well argue to ban monocolor cards in case they print mana tithe 2: tithe harder?

I would listen to my podcast I put up today. Hybrid mana was specifically designed to be played in monocolor decks. That was the core of the design intent behind making it.

So even in play, in the case of Devotion to Monocolor, the hybrid pip is an And, not an Or.

I mean....we have 6-7 soon sets released in a year which is not even including the secret lair supplementary product when they go into mechanical unique card territory.....the amount of cardboard that comes into magic provides enough tools for monocolor decks that I think there be fine as is atm.

the problem I always run into with magic: arena's design is that very quickly you realize the optimal way to play is standard monocolor aggro decks to tick off your quests, and then you next realize you should just stop because theres no incentive to play good formats at all

Pond Prophet is a great example of ineffective hybrid design - a good card in exactly UG, making it a gold card that's easier to cast. You can see this exemplified in its poor performance elsewhere, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze at GG/UU!

Like don't get me wrong there's some fucking sick work, but I want stuff like this, just simple and quick and functional, the kinda thing that folks can buy a pdf and print off a copy at home, and feel like that's the intended form factor.
