    According to a report, 249,124 working mothers of children aged <5 have left their jobs due to difficulties balancing work and childcare. 40% had turned down a promotion for the same reason.     It turns out, that under some perhaps non-typical circumstances*, the #MotherhoodPenalty, turns into a motherhood premium. That is, mothers earn more, after admittedly a long time (~15 years or so) than non-Mothers. 4/

    I had two babies, both C-sections. Even with good insurance, it cost me $1,000 each time just to deliver. Now the gov wants to hand out $5K “baby bonuses” instead of real support like paid leave or childcare. Moms deserve more.

            Congratulations, American women. Your government has decided to show its appreciation for your wombs and all they do. Not with paid family leave. Not with universal health care. Not with affordable child care or maternal health initiatives that might, I don’t know, actually keep you and your baby alive. No, no. For the high honor of growing, birthing, and raising an entire human being, the federal government would like to offer you five thousand dollars. A baby bonus, they’re calling it.     The #MotherhoodPenalty does not affect all mothers equally. Black, Latina & Indigenous mothers earn as little as 48¢, 38¢, and 32¢ respectively for every $1 white, non-Hispanic fathers earn, when including full-time and part-time workers. #EqualPayNY #MomsEqualPayDay
