puts this here bc it is one of my favorite posts, and the last addition is an interesting one i hadn't seen before. What Do People Get Out of Fiction, What are We Mythologizing and What Needs are We Meeting by Doing So in What Context is a fundamental burning curiosity for me
[1/2]
since this is a Big Subject that covers Many different things, and it'd be both unwieldy and bad for me to try to cram them all in one thread, i foresee returning to this one a lot.
today's dynamic: the idea that it's abusive to never be okay with someone 'taking time away to think.'
thinking tiredly once again about how 'is this abuse' resources and conversations desperately need to be updated to accommodate for the fact that a not-remotely-insignificant number of the only markers that are ever listed can just as easily be describing abuse in the other direction

goes ahead and puts this here because it helps with establishing a LOT of ground for things that i talk about re: abuse and sexual violence in fiction, and also because pop culture detective's video essays on this subject are Fantastic

i think one of the worst i've seen gain steam in recent years is people getting midsommar syndrome over fictional societies that are blatant depictions of colonialism and white supremacy, intentional or otherwise, and claiming they're indigenous and that saying they're fucked up is racist

also, i feel like i should clarify that by 'roll my eyes' at reading comprehension fails' i mean 'this person has genuinely and demonstrably shown that they do not understand the canon that they are basing their take on'; i feel strongly about Thinking It Through when someone
GENUINELY THOUGH this crossed my feed in an incredibly timely manner. it's important to learn your limits and the headspace it puts you in, and ideally have someone you trust to spot for you if you're getting into self-harm territory, but it can be so, so therapeutic if you're careful
above near all when it comes to stupid fandom BS that plagues my every step, this sums it up. ppl are too goddamn gullible when it comes to the Vibes they are (or parse as being) spoonfed by a narrative, and think it's bad reading comp to not blindly accept those vibes as truth.
best example i've seen of why 'i hope you get your family out of star wars' is one of the worst things to ever happen to anti-censorship rhetoric, and why liking an -ist char isn't the problem, it's parroting -ist ideology bc you're too immature to separate fiction from reality. the Fuck
tiredly marks down 'it has been 0 days since our last rancid abuse apologia on my dash in the form of [FEMALE CHARACTER] ISN'T ABUSIVE/A PREDATOR, SHE'S JUST ~A FLAWED COMPLEX PERSON WITH NEEDS AND FEELINGS~ AND WE LOVE THAT FOR HER' on the whiteboard

for now, tl;dr: i may start a tag for it so it's easier for people who need to blacklist it for their sanity rn, but this is a complex and fascinating subject that *is* the corner of my hobby i have left to escape into when bigoted fucks invade it with irl -isms anyway.

i am tired and out of it and probably i'll have to pick this thread back up later, but i think about this post a lot. i've thought about it pretty much constantly in my dealings with fandom and media analysis ever since i read it, because it hits the target dead fucking on.

i am Out of It and not v coherent today, but the more socmed becomes bent on dismantling literally any attempt at boundaries/separation btwn spaces, fandom has GOT to bring back norms to filter positive vs negative discussion of media w/o bullying people for criticizing something you like
