I just tried playing a saxophone for the first time in my life & now I have a visceral understanding/appreciation for all saxophone music I didn't realize I was missing, wow. The obsession with & variation in tone, the temptation to make long droney things w/ multiphonics & circular breathing...

Albert Mangelsdorff

(Frankfurt/Main: * 5.09.1928 -
† 25.07.2005)

German jazz trombonist.

With his Multiphonics & the Inside-Outside-Improvisations he added new aspects to trombone playing in jazz.
He is therefore an innovative & important representative of his instrument in jazz.

Feel free to ask me about oboe, English horn, flute, and piccolo — those are the ones I have very advanced knowledge about (including modern techniques like multiphonics, and beatboxing on flute). Baroque oboe is a recent addition to my toolbox (performance in March).

Not a silly sound, but multiphonics around people that don’t know what multiphonics are. Especially the powerchord you can play on a low Bb on saxes

Here is a small cell of music that I use for Meow Wolf. This cell of music utilizes multiphonics that are sung under the played pitch. I like to call these undertones!

Here's one that has me on it! I'm track 3. There are also two other ones in the series, also on Bandcamp

My track has flute, clarinet, and MIDI keyboard, with lots of multiphonics and glitchy ham radio samples

Recorded some bass clarinet parts for some absolutely gorgeous songs today. My chops are a wreck after three hours of mostly long tones and delicate multiphonics but omg so so beautiful.

Och lilla hjärtat som försökt skriva ut grepp för multiphonics men bara har googlat och greppen hen skrivit in är inte multiphonicsgrepp för hen har blandat ihop höger och vänster

There is a bird outside singing its face off, doing multiphonics and everything.

Multiphonics, particularly on oboe, cor anglais (English horn), bass clarinet, make nails on a blackboard sound like a celeste.

For saxophonists, I was requested to create a hybrid of Christian Lauba's "Jungle" and "Bat" in a single piece. That's not a terribly inviting thing, particularly since a prospective performer either needs to learn two multitrack parts or find a second person brave enough for the shenanigans (3/?)

I'm normally out and about when listening to noise/experimental on earbuds, so there's a lot of 'augmented reality' as the world bleeds into the music/sound. My favourite example of added mishearing was on a train and hearing clarinet multiphonics and cellos in Radigue's L'île re-sonante. Was train.

he plays with a crystal clear tone, not soaked in vibrato even when he states ballad themes, but also isn't manneristic about the deployment of multiphonics and other effects like a lot of uh, downtown sax players
