I just tried playing a saxophone for the first time in my life & now I have a visceral understanding/appreciation for all saxophone music I didn't realize I was missing, wow. The obsession with & variation in tone, the temptation to make long droney things w/ multiphonics & circular breathing...

Feel free to ask me about oboe, English horn, flute, and piccolo — those are the ones I have very advanced knowledge about (including modern techniques like multiphonics, and beatboxing on flute). Baroque oboe is a recent addition to my toolbox (performance in March).

It must have been at that point when I lost all awareness. From there the memories seem to be not my own, but the foreign recollections of some other mind, conveyed to me so that I might remember and be tortured by the understanding of things beyond the concern of mere mortals. I recall existing as a formless spirit, disembodied, drifting aimlessly in a space between the planes, devoid of the trappings of physical laws. I tried to move, but scale and distance held no meaning in that place. I was both nowhere and everywhere, a lonely waveform resonating sympathetically with the struggles of my drowning psyche.

I heard a voice echoing throughout the void, a slow, deafening whisper threatening to drown out all errant thoughts and sounds. It held a clear feminine softness, the hard sternness and gentle affection of a mother, but was a deep subcontrabass beyond the capabilities of any male, smeared upwards into a dissonant chorus of overtones and multiphonics. Every syllable induced ripples in the emptiness, and as the waves washed over me, the words I heard felt like acid etching metal.

"Wherefore dost thou resist?" demanded the voice.

"Resist what?" I asked back. "What is all this? What is happening?"

"The end," it answered.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"I am the beginning of everything thou hast ever known, and I am the conclusion thereof," the voice claimed. "I am the bloom of the seed of creation, and I am the nothingness beyond its final breath. I am void. I am the end."

"The end? the end of what?" I asked.

"The end," it answered again.

"No..." I said. I just kept repeating that one word.

"Everything must end," said the voice. "Soon I must end as well, and all that I have wrought must return to me."

"This can't be it!" I pleaded. I floundered, struggling to hold my head above the sea of non-existence.

"All must return from whence they came. That is the way of things, the way it must be. Dost thou not wish thus? Dost thou not tire of the mindless drudgery of thy life, day after day, static and unchanging? Do the hours not weigh on thee?" The voice spoke the

way my own mother did when she soothed me as a child, distraught at the end of a bedtime story, desperate to stave off sleep. I didn't want my story to come to a close.

"No!" I said. "You can't just decide what I want!"

"They have already accepted their lot, who art thou to choose otherwise?" asked the voice.

"I'm me!" I replied. "They can't choose for me! They can't have chosen this! I won't believe it!"

"I have heard it," said the voice. "Thy people are slavering for extinction. Verily they yearn for the abyss, with every breath asking for it. Dost thou not see the way they gnaw and tear at one another in the streets, treating their brethren with such disdain as reserved for the foulest of corpse-eaters? Ripe is thy world, blood and death betwixt every stratum. They have called for me."

"That can't be true," I said. "Who would want this?"

"It is in the nature of all I create," the voice answered. "All creation tendeth toward entropy. Life is but a temporary diversion on the way to the final state, the final chapter in my story and thus yours. It is an anomaly of nature, one that I tire of."

"Don't speak of nature to me," I said. "Nothing about this was natural! The Councils did this!"

"I embody a universe and all it encompasses," said the voice. "By my very nature I define what is, what once was, and what shall be. Nothing hath happened which I have not preordained. Do thy thinkers not claim that all things are determined by events previous, events which I have set in motion? Thou art nought but a prisoner of causality, a single link in a long chain leading down into darkness."

"They also claim the opposite," I said. "Is there no free will?"

"Who can say?" replied the voice. "Canst thou truly claim that thy choices are thine own, when thy perception is limited to what I allow thee to comprehend of me? All paths diverge only to arrive at the same destination, every deviation serving only to bring thee closer to the same conclusion. I am inevitability, the ultimate truth, immutable. What I have authored thy cannot overwrite."

"Then you know my choice," I said.

"Thou art a drop in the ocean resisting dissolution," said the voice. "There is no choice."

For saxophonists, I was requested to create a hybrid of Christian Lauba's "Jungle" and "Bat" in a single piece. That's not a terribly inviting thing, particularly since a prospective performer either needs to learn two multitrack parts or find a second person brave enough for the shenanigans (3/?)

I'm normally out and about when listening to noise/experimental on earbuds, so there's a lot of 'augmented reality' as the world bleeds into the music/sound. My favourite example of added mishearing was on a train and hearing clarinet multiphonics and cellos in Radigue's L'île re-sonante. Was train.

he plays with a crystal clear tone, not soaked in vibrato even when he states ballad themes, but also isn't manneristic about the deployment of multiphonics and other effects like a lot of uh, downtown sax players
