#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: Common wood-pigeon, not remarkable to people in Europe, but I had never seen one before. Glasgow, Scotland, 10/23/24.

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay A couple of killdeer, which is a type of plover. Very common across the U.S. but can be skittish, so this photo was a good "get" for me. Cape May Point State Park, NJ, 2/15/2013.

Snow volcanoes on Lake Ontario. I liked how the opening is perpendicular to the water. #naturephotooftheday

Now that I'm home from Scotland and have downloaded all my photos, let's get back to #NaturePhotoOfTheDay. These are deer we spotted from the road on the way from Isle of Skye to Oban. I hope they are red deer but it was dusk so the light is bad and I can't say for sure. Also, there's a story.

Oh goodness, I haven't done a #NaturePhotoOfTheDay in a while and then a memory feature reminded me of photos of this northern water snake! It was so exciting to see this snake and it wasn't fazed by my presence, though it didn't hang around. Cape May Point State Park, NJ, April 21 2012.

Well I am SUPER bad at remembering to do things consistently, but my archive reminded me of photos from years past on this date, and some EXCELLENT nesting osprey shots from Forsythe NWR in Galloway Twp NJ. #NaturePhotoOfTheDay

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: Roosevelt elk, Forks WA, October 2021. This was at the airport--those patches of grass along the runway and the limited access provided a convenient and fairly safe place to graze.

I got out of the habit of #NaturePhotoOfTheDay due to lots of life-stuff; today is a good day to start again. I'll post new going forward, but on David Lynch's birthday, sharing this again this feels like the right choice. (The reason why is in a reply to the original post.) bsky.app/profile/e-va...
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: A seasonal choice today: Varied thrush. These lovely birds are related to American robins. They engage in altitudinal migration: they spend the breeding season in the mountains, and migrate to lowlands for winter. Photo taken from our balcony in Seattle, November 2019.

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: A very picturesque Eurasian blackbird, Culloden, Scotland (yes, the battlefield). These are not related to N American blackbirds; they are thrushes and more closely related to American robins (which are NOT related to European robins). Taxonomy & species naming are fun. 😛

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: In honor of the day, an owl, specifically a barred owl, though I don't find these especially spooky. Seward Park in Seattle, November 2017.

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay I was EXTREMELY excited to see this little bird while we were on a nature walk in Inverness, Scotland: a European robin! I thought they were migratory & I wouldn't see any in October; but they are not, and we were fortunate to see it & get a couple of quick, not-the-best photos.

I need to get back in the #NaturePhotoOfTheDay habit. Here's a yellow-crowned night heron at dusk. Taken in the salt marsh at Anchorage Point on Great Egg Harbor Bay (across from Ocean City) in New Jersey, June 2011.

Trying yet again to get consistent with #NaturePhotoOfTheDay and a memory feature brought this: happy 5-year anniversary to the luckiest bird photo I've ever taken, all the more because it was in my own neighborhood. American crow hassles osprey that was trying to eat, Seattle, WA, 6/1/2020.

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay In honor of #WorldWildlifeDay *and* our national parks, and by request of @secondnaturemb.bsky.social, some critters I photographed at Mount Rainier NP, August 2019:
Wild forget-me-not moth
Canada jay
Sooty grouse
Golden-mantled ground squirrel

#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: Jackdaws! I was also very excited about these raucous little corvids, until I'd spent a couple days around them. They're like if you crossed European starlings with crows and ended up with the worst traits of both. 😜 Pitlochry, Scotland.
