Guest commentary: Invasive species pose a serious challenge for ecosystems that have not evolved alongside them, and such is the case with NC's crystal skipper and the nonnative horses allowed to roam the barrier islands that are the butterfly's only habitat.

Aquilegia formosa, the nonnative Western Columbine, blooming in my yard. It doesn't grow in the wild in Colorado but is native further west, especially in the Sierras. I grew these ones because I love Columbines!

So…I came down on a student for using the plagiarism machine on an essay, and then I heard their submission on a voice assignment and discovered that they're a nonnative English speaker and not especially fluent. That knowledge throws other submissions in doubt.

Time to write a very delicate email.

I came away with several topics from the presentation I want to read up on, including the relationships between the canneries, the unions, and Native and nonNative fishermen.

The presenter was Tim Troll, author of Sail for Salmon: The Early Years of Commercial Fishing in Alaska's Bristol Bay.

I’ve seen people delight in salting/burning/shooting nonnative species. They see their invasive status as a free pass to be monstrous. Feeling justified in killing is not a reason to lose your compassion.

Vinca minor, the nonnative escapee Lesser Periwinkle, blooming along Boulder Creek.
Highly invasive in places like California's coast range, it doesn't seem to be spreading much into Colorado's wildlands possibly because it's too cold and dry here.
