Among many important things mages at the Sanctum Arcanum were not told during training is the fact that clouds are cold – cold and wet. Watching the sun rise from the deck of an aethership was truly amazing, and the standard-issue longcoat and goggles helped, but regular checks for hypothermia by the ship’s surgeon were as damaging to morale as spending the maiden voyage of an experimental fleet hiding in wisps above the waves.

Fresh ocean breeze the next morning was heaven to my senses and the sand under my feet a balm for my soul. I rounded the stern, stared up at The Rose Compass' aft arcane buoys, and pushed away thoughts of Ludmilla’s and Oline’s empty hammocks. My mentor would have insisted that distractions bred weakness and focus was the lifeblood of a mage, but how many times was he tempted by not one but three lithe women whom I respected and was coming to care about in a bed only large enough for two? I pressed my eyelids shut and dragged myself from images of what might have happened in the Captain’s quarters the previous night. No. Absolutely not. I was a renegade, sure, but still a graduate of the Sanctum Arcanum. I had a job. This crew would go on without me once complete. There was zero sense in fantasies and even less in hopes and dreams when Madame Choi would just pull me back to the free port, literally by my collar if she had to. A comfortable, simmering snarl slid back into place and I opened my eyes. The job. Just do the job. I looked at the enormous bloodstone crystals and slid effortlessly into the weave but, for the first time since the orphanage, the kinship I felt more to magics than people was dwarfed. I willed my emotional armor shield me from this new hunger but my familiar snarl just sneered, turned on me – ready to protect new, thin red ribbons leading from my heart up from the dry dock toward the aft window of the Captain’s cabin.

I could only just hear the first mate in my ringing ears. "…​but Mechanist Heyhill is gone. The Captain is gone. Listen to me! Abjurer Liang, you must…​" I shut him out. I had to regain control. I needed to reconnect with the aethership’s remaining three arcane buoys. I could right the ship, cloak us, and possibly save the rest of the crew. Spells, musket shot, and cannonballs zipped through the air as I pushed into the weave toward the massive bloodstone crystals. Their shapes once again appeared in my mind but their greedy, expectant hum was replaced with a whine that was nearly a scream. I steeled myself, certain this was going to cost something I wasn’t prepared to give, but nearly lost the connection when the collar resting on my collarbones tightened on my throat. "Abjurer Liang!" The first mate’s voice filled my world as he stepped toward me, though the lanky man’s reedy presence didn’t smother everything like Captain Perkins' had. Curious. "I have taken command of this vessel and you will listen to me." I swallowed hard, tasting ash and cordite, and shut my eyes. We were taught that the transfer of power was absolute. The enchantments on board an aethership, my collar included, followed chain of command. But I was still connected to the three crystals holding our sloop aloft. I could feel the protective wards along the hull. They all were reaching toward the first mate. They yearned for authority but, at the same time, they were alive in the weave and fickle things. I knew I had just a few moments to seize an opportunity. When I opened my eyes I already had both hands leveled at the lieutenant. His brow furrowed, even as he screamed orders at me with spittle whipping away in the wind. I couldn’t directly damage him even if I hadn’t been useless with offensive magics. But I could certainly protect him with my shields. I reached through the weave, wrapped him in the most gentle barrier I could manage, lifted, and threw him overboard.

"I accept." I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, smearing blood across my knuckles, and cracked my neck side-to-side – the steel at my throat making itself known with each movement. I glanced around at the gathering deckhands, picking out the first mate with a thrust of my chin. "As the challenged, I choose the weapon or method, yes?" The towering half-orc crossed her arms, took a deep breath, and nodded. She pinned the short, stocky boson across from me with a glare. "Chi sau." I spat at my challenger and was met with a furrowed brow. I caught a bark of laughter from our first mate, but more than a few deckhands mirrored his expression. "Sticking hands." I took a wide stance and offered a fist in an open, normally-too-far-forward position. "Touch the back of your hand to mine. It stays like it’s been glued. Drop this connection and you lose." His eyes narrowed, but he sidled to me slowly with a swagger that I intended to beat out of him. "That’s it?" I shrugged. "Normally we would start at quarter speed and reset at the first successful attack." I grinned, baring bloodied teeth. "I say we suspend both those additional rules and just go with: last one standing." Win by perseverance, which I had done all my life.

I still haven't decided on the full range of benefits and drawbacks for mage collars in this world, but they're not great

"You knew?" Her eyes narrowed and then her expression went cold, emotionless. "No, you were there." She began to lift a hand slowly. "Captain…​" My stomach soured. My mouth became a desert. "It’s not…​" "Silence!" She snarled. The steel around my throat pulsed warmth and I could no longer speak. I shook my head and lifted my hands in surrender. "Sable wait," Ludmilla stepped away. Her gaze darted between the two of us. "We don’t know…​" "You will address me as Captain, witch." She spat toward her long-time crew-mate with frightening vitriol before pointing at me with her open palm and lifting. Again the collar bloomed with heat, though this time it tightened and lifted. I clawed at the enchanted steel with my fingertips and attempted to focus on a levitation spell. I survived similar abuse from Captain Perkins and the cruelty of others at the Sanctum Arcanum before him. I was determined not to meet my end via the wrath of a pirate.

Sunlight was a bastard – thirst, nausea, the smell of that awful durian liquor, and gravity too. The rough-hewn sheets clinging to my the back of my neck could jump right off the nearest pier. Also, I was pretty sure I was about to murder whoever kept pounding on the inside my skull.

Then I nearly lost my footing as the entire skyship lurched the wrong direction. I snarled but felt my stomach churn as multiple crew raised reports: "Dragon!"
