Thyme had tried so hard to wait up, she really, really had— but she’d just been exhausted, nodding off next to the hearth with her knitting neglected in her lap, and the last thing she remembers is strong, steady arms wrapping around her and a little breathy chuckle in her ear and Tee, c’mon, you’re gonna freeze out here. Now the sunrise glitters in her eyes from the east-facing window of their bedroom and she’s surrounded by warmth, soft and sweet and heavy, two hundred fifty ponze at Rosemary’s last counting, apparently, and deep, even breaths that tickle in hot gusts against Thyme’s neck. She thinks, drowsily, as sleep washes over her again, that she’d happily stay here for the rest of their lives, if only Rosemary would ask.

Baderon spots her from his usual post, polishing a glass behind the bar, and waves her over. “Oi, Wilds! You got that delivery for me, or what?” The crate of glassware lands on the countertop with a thud, and Baderon pulls a face as something inside goes clinking against its fellows. Roe smirks down at him from across the bar. “Payment for services rendered?” The barkeep rolls his eyes as he slaps a couple of gil pieces into Roe’s outstretched palm. “You’re lucky I like you,” he says, “‘cuz your kid gloves could use some work.” Roe snorts. “Don’t pretend every mug in this place isn’t chipped like hell already.” She stuffs the gil into her pocket and touches her temple in cheeky salute. “Nice doin’ business.” “Yeah, yeah.” Baderon flaps his dishrag at her as she turns away, laughing. “I’ll call next time I need some more shite broken.”

it’s her favorite part of the job: when someone really, really needed help and she can feel how relieved they are to see her in the brightness of their grateful smile, the eagerness with which they clasp her hands and press gil into her palm, the I don’t know what I would have done without yous, that warmth like morning sunshine on her skin and that happy leap in her stomach that exclaims I helped, I was useful, I made someone’s day. that feeling, that job-well-done contentment, is reward enough. but, roe thinks as the coins gently clink into her coinpurse, the gil doesn’t hurt, either.
