A jawfish, cautiously peering out of its burrow in Anilao. This is far and away the most common way to see them; they tend to be rather shy. I think this one is a yellowbarred jawfish (Opistognathus randalli).

#FishADay Opistognathus aurifrons Yellowhead Jawfish. Caribbean Reef Dweller. Doesn't just use its mouth for eating--both sexes excavate burrows in sand and males brood young with their mouths.

Happy Father’s Day from the Gold-specs jawfish (Opistognathus randalli) The males carry the eggs in their mouth to protect offspring from predators. To attract females, male jawfish do a “dance” and at the crescendo the males open their mouths wide to boast their mouthbrooding potential! That's LOVE

🐠Yellowhead jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) are expert burrow builders, 🧬adapting perfectly to sandy reef habitats. Males take family care to the next level, mouthbrooding eggs until they hatch. Their sedentary lifestyle leads to localized populations with unique traits. 🪸🌊🦑🌎

Jawfish are small to moderately sized fish well known for their moth-brooding behavior, in which parents carry their sticky egg mass in their mouth until hatching. A new species joins their ranks: Opistognathus cryos from the Peng-hu Islands, Taiwan doi.org/10.3897/zook...
