A large grey stone tower with narrow slits for arrows to be fired through on the left and part of a parapet near the top rises above Loch Ness on a cloudy day. The tower is part of the ruined Urquhart Castle, in the Scottish Highlands
southwest of Inverness close to the small town of Drumnadrochit. Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, it saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. The power struggles continued, as the Lords of the Isles regularly raided both castle and the Great Glen up until the 1500s.
The last of the government troops garrisoned here during the Jacobite Risings of 1745 blew up the castle when they left. The ruins remain, offering glimpses into medieval times and the lives of its noble residents.
