Disappointing election in #montreal for housing, parties still have a dated “we will literally build the affordable housing” approach.
On the bright side it’s great that @CraigSauve boldly put #prorep on the table and that two #yimby members of @construisonsmtl ran in #westmount with Jessica […]

So true. Like many, I voted #Liberal to keep the #Conservatives out, but the Cons still won our riding. Our region has been traditionally #NDP, but our boundary ridings have been redrawn, and now all three are Conservative. #cdnpoli #prorep #proportionalrepresentation www.fairvote.ca/29/04/2025/c...
This is what a two party system looks like - Fair Vote Canada
Canada’s voting system is failing voters. Many voted strategically, motivated to block the other side from winning. The results leave us more divided than ever and closer to a two-party system.

The only think one would need to worry about is the independent commission for riding boundaries to determine how the new boundaries (with or without top up) would be redrawn but if we’re already do math fairly for the current regions, I only see PR as a bonus

#Progressive vote completely split the left on #VancouverIsland. The 3 #Conservative wins are very low representative percentages with the total winning votes at NorthIsland 38%, #Nanaimo 35% & #Cowichan 37%.

1st priority needs to be #electionreform to remove FPTP & go ProRep model @fairvote.ca 🗳️🇨🇦

Canadian election are ridiculously secure and give us plenty of time to vote. I have full confidence that even something as complex as STV (ranked ballot PR) or RUP can be adapted to our election with some effort. Or open list MMP if we wanted something a little simpler comparatively. #prorep

You mean every single vote is counted not every single vote counts.
In my riding, liberals are expected to win with over 10,000 unnecessary votes.
If you don't do your civic duty, it's because you don't appreciate democracy or you are waiting for prorep to vote without feeling being mocked.

True, and the funding formulas for new schools and districts are archaic. But the at large system dilutes geographic accountability and stifles voter turnout. ProRep would too Corey.

You know reading me on microblogging sites must be an experience because one minute I'll be posting about the channel, next it will be friend's artwork, then memes, then tech, then memes again, then post politics like prorep.

Like what do you guys think me at that point?

“Why vote? It won’t matter.”

You’re not wrong. That’s why we’re changing the rules.
#ProportionalRepresentation = every vote counts, every voice matters.

You know the more I learn about the current electoral system in Canada the more confident I am in a STV (Single Tranferable vote), open list MMP (mixed member proportional) or RUP (rural urban proportional) is viable here in Canada.

One of the more wild ideas I had surrounding Proportional Representation is:
- STV+ version of Rural Urban Proprotional (a mixed system with elements of STV, AV and MMP
- allow for candidates to run a full slate + 1 in each local riding
- best runner up top-up

“[#ProRep] systems... are used in about one hundred jurisdictions in our country, and are firmly established in federal VRA case law. [It] offers a reasonable remedial plan to not only settle the controversy, but also prevent future litigation.”

Yes, finishing 1st in an election is too high a bar for smaller parties. We need to move away from winner-take-all elections so that 2nd, 3rd, 4th-place finishes also win seats. Then we'd *all* get fair representation.

Sorry to say this, but a single third party is just a spoiler, dude.
But look. I get your outsider’s tendency to start with what looks like an obvious outsider’s solution.
It’s just… a bit more complicated.

So you want to start a new political party that “actually represents the 80% in the middle”? Good luck.

US democracy is in trouble.

Various structural fixes are needed.

In most cases, the 1st step is clear. Not so with gerrymandering.

Just drawing better maps doesn't reliably fix gerrymandering.

Existing ProRep methods would, but probably aren't politically viable in US.
