A green-cheeked (conure) parakeet rests sideways in a person’s cupped, open hand. The bird’s body lies along the width of the palm, relaxed & supported by the fingers gently curled against its right side. Its plumage is vivid & layered: bright dark green wings & back with clearly defined feather edges, red-to-yellow belly & yellow-green chest blend into a lighter scalloped pattern on the throat & grayish-brown head. A distinct white eye ring encircles the dark eye & the short, curved beak is dark gray to black. The long tail feathers extend past the person’s wrist, transitioning from deep blue-green near the body, to darker tones with hints of red underneath. The person’s light-skinned hand & forearm fill the lower half of the image, with fine arm hair visible. The background is softly blurred, showing warm indoor lighting, a yellowish floor or surface & indistinct shapes of furniture and a navy blanket, the focus on the hand cradled bird.

A small green-cheeked conure perches against a bare forearm indoors. Facing forward in the picture, its head tilts right, a single, dark eye visible, looks upward inquisitively. They made me laugh. They watched over me when I was sick. They were there for me in my best and worst times. Now neither of them are here anymore, although my two angels live eternally in my heart.
