uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade - Blog - Dr. Emily L. Hunt
Released in 2024, uv is hands-down the best tool for managing Python installations and dependencies. Here's why.

The actual job ad requires this:

"Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, awarded within the last five years

Programming experience in one or more of Python, C++, Fortran, or Julia

Knowledge of high-performance and parallel computing"

I'm increasingly terrified that, unless I get one of the postdoc fellowships I've applied for, I'll effectively be unemployable:

-I have a PhD in geoscience, but know jack-all about rocks
-I know Python, but nothing about programming AI, which apparently is all anyone cares about

See one of the reasons I still use Ruby is Crystal's horrible indexing system, I should be able to index a tuple of arrays just fine, as this works in just every other programming language, even #python and #julia.

There is...really no excuse for now to be like Ruby in this specific way.

A cool paper from OOPSLA '25 —

An Empirical Evaluation of Property-Based Testing in Python
dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...

Some interesting findings:
- "Each property-based test finds about 50x as many mutations as the average unit test"
- "76% of mutations were found within the first 20 inputs"

Mixed feelings about typing everything and using mypy. It finds alot of possible bugs and problems, but it takes the lightness out of my programming.

How can a language model find the veggies in a menu?

New pre-print where we investigate the internal mechanisms of LLMs when filtering on a list of options.

Spoiler: turns out LLMs use strategies surprisingly similar to functional programming (think "filter" from python)! 🧵

Welcome all to news.seosiri.com

Le Thela! While doing SEO for the news site, we had to work with Python.

No worries, the “Thela” was rescued within an hour.

"programming is like Taco Bell, an infinity of menu options are all made using the same seven ingredients"

Oh good! Someone from the @racketlang community can weigh in on the benefits.

Oh wait…

Anyway, sooner or later the time for computable reals will come. I'm still HODLing stock in continued fractions (and teaching them every year to my first-year students).

I think it's very enjoyable to use, but I've been programming for a while. GDScript (its main language) is basically like Python, though it supports C# as well. It's a lightweight engine compared to Unity or Unreal.

unfortunately even though it is open source I lack either the statistics knowledge or the programming expertise to figure out what's wrong!!!

if I don't hear back from this guy I suppose I could manually compute idea density but then what did I learn to use Python for?

helping my son with his Python programming homework, he's making a text adventure game

and debugging is fun, lol. I'm teaching him some techniques I've learned over the years to make it easier and not as much hair pulling out

also, once upon a time.... there was markup language (HTML) that wasn't considered a programming language, and now when using it, people indicate that they are coding a web site. same for a scripting language (hi Python) that is now defacto programming language for data.

@futurebird That's kind of like "German is the English of human languages". Python and JavaScript are both programming languages; JavaScript has invaded everywhere and is kind of a mess, kind of like English.
