Fast forward to last week - Washington and Beijing “solved” the Nexperia crisis between themselves, according to the various statements, agreeing to restart the flow of chips seemingly without any European / Dutch involvement

A grizzly bit of realpolitik.

the thing about "still gotta win elections" is that sounds all realpolitik until you realize that avoidance lets the other guys define you in your absence and "moderating" communicates that their narrative about you is correct.
I guess this is the savvy take or whatever but as an empirical matter, it doesn't work to reinforce the narratives of your opponents. If Democrats start start saying, "immigrants are the reason crime rates are high!" they won't convince anti-immigrant voters and they'll alienate pro-immigrant voters

I get the realpolitik but, like, he’s the cost of living guy and this is the cost of living thing.
"I've yet to take a position," Zohran Mamdani says in Hell's Kitchen about the housing-related referendum questions on the Nov. 4 ballot. "I will be sharing that as soon as I do."

Early voting started Saturday & hundreds of thousands of NYers have already cast ballots.

Yeah, the only option other than apologizing to the rapist fascist was calling him a donkey.

I’d be fine with dropping all of the rest of these for either policy or realpolitik reasons, but increasing EV purchases is good on both the political merits because anything that decreases the political salience of car juice prices is good structurally and the policy ones bc they’re the future.
Here with yellow checkmarks we have five examples of real things that Gavin Newsom and leading California Democrats espouse. Not a straw man.

My take is Democrats should drop these ideas, ideas that do not sound at all like economic populism to me.

if I was in her position as the only opposition leader left with any legitimacy or platform I don't know that any of my actions or rhetoric would be at all different.
But that mostly means I don't know if she's completely insane or a rational actor doing realpolitik

It’s not the perfect attitude, but perfect is the enemy of the good. When we’re up against something like the white supremacist right, I’ll take any port in the storm. Food moves the needle on people and right now that’s really all that matters, it’s realpolitik.

Doesn't count to me. Even given my "ill gibe anyone the tiniest benefit of the doubt if they try" mentality,I'd still expect him to get the damn thing lasered off, on camera, because that's what you do as a tough-guy working-still realpolitik guy like him in this situation, if you're serious.

I feel like there are so many parallels to chunks of the left and their debilitating refusal to leave political theoryland and crippling idealism rather than the messy grind of realpolitik and getting sh_t done.

They want to be permanent aristocrats whom the law protects but does not bind.

And they're too stupid to realize that whom the law does not bind, realpolitik *will* bind, and far more cruelly and violently, as in modern day Russia, where their counterparts fall out of windows.

Yeah and the real cowardly twist is that i think they're using this notional "popularity" to cover up the fact that that's how they actually think.

"We'd *love* to support your human rights, really we would, but you see we're just so dedicated to this realpolitik we've imagined that we can't"
neat trick the "centrists" love to pull: just blankly asserting that all of their personal biases are popular and the things they don't like are unpopular and dragging the party down

we see the transphobia, folks
i'm fine with a deeper focus on economic issues over social issues but man does plank 2 give the game away

Realpolitik : how the law is enforced, who it is and is not enforced against, by which bodies, using what mechanisms and in whose interests.
