Why don’t we hoard Rhenium instead? It’s significantly rarer.

With "rare earths" in the news, it's possible some of us have forgotten what they are. So here is the complete catalogue from Tom Lehrer - including as a bonus all the everyday elements as well. You won't go far wrong with this by your side.

Because the very hard rhenium diboride darts essentially pass right through light armor, the only damage they do is to things they hit directly. (Shed has a thing or two to say about that...)
Heavy armor in turn, ends up producing a deadly hail of shrapnel inside the target. Very unpleasant.

Pictured here is the TDN's Sentry UGCV, an uncrewed tank destroyer, armed with a 75mm chemically assisted Railgun, firing rhenium diboride darts.
Strong against tanks, weak against light armor.

#Molybdenite accommodates transition elements, and its isotopes record age. Its transition element chemistry changed after the Great Oxidation Event. Molybdenite recorded the progressive influence of atmospheric O2 on crustal chemistry.

You probably play that leftist Tom Lehrer's "Elements Song" for them, too.

And hydrogen, and oxygen, and nitrogen, and rhenium
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium
Europium, zirconium...🎶

I once worked with a catalyst that used rhenium as a kind of stabilizer for the supported metal on a TiO2 support. So, in memory of old times and research past, gotta go Molybdenite.

Zunyite is a collector’s stone & source of Al & F. Molybdenite ores are the source for Re used in geochronology, an important ore of Mo (used in steel, as a catalyst, in battery electrodes, alloys of iron & semiconductors) plus looks like & marks paper like graphite. Gets my physics vote. #MinCup25

Zunyite vs molybdenite today! Zunyite forms in hydrothermal alteration environments and large crystals may be gemstone quality! Molybdenite's hexagonal crystals are delightfully shiny, and it can be used for rhenium-osmium geochronology.
#MinCup25 Round 1 Match 12: It's the visually-unmistakable #zunyite vs the physically funky #molybdenite.

The islands do have rhenium & fish, but, in the unlikely event they are returned to Japan, there’d be major financial costs: new infrastructure to connect the islands to Hokkaido, schemes to encourage Japanese to resettle on the islands, the security costs of defending yet more remote islands etc.
