At #ACR25, the session “Enhancing Shared Decision Making in Rheumatic Disease Management” brought together clinicians, researchers & patients to reflect on what it means to share decisions in rheumatology, not as an abstract concept, but as lived practice shaped by communication, trust & equity.

Immune-cell profiling now decodes rheumatic diseases with precision, enabling targeted treatment for subsets of patients. PMID:40890367, Nat Rev Rheumatol 2025, @NatRevRheumatol https://doi.org/10.1038/s41584-025-01291-0 #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG 🧪
Immune-cell profiling to guide stratification and treatment of patients with rheumatic diseases | Nature Reviews Rheumatology
Methods for high-dimensional immune-cell profiling have advanced dramatically in the past decade. Studies of tissue and blood samples from patients with rheumatic diseases have revealed stereotyped features of immune dysregulation in individual diseases and in subsets of patients who share diagnosis of a heterogeneous disease. Translating immunological patterns into clinically implementable, actionable biomarkers has the potential to improve detection and quantification of pathological immune activity and selection of appropriate treatments for autoimmune rheumatic diseases. For example, cytometric features can be used to distinguish the various forms of inflammatory arthritis, stratify subsets of patients with rheumatoid arthritis or subsets of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and predict treatment responses. Cellular immune profiling also enables the identification of specific features of immune dysregulation in individuals with rare, undiagnosed, inflammatory diseases. Sev

Because you are greasy or pimpled – or that you was once drunk, or a thief, of diseased, or rheumatic, of a prostitute – or are so now – or from frivolity or impotence – or that you are no scholar, and never saw your name in print .... do you give in that you are any less immortal?

All you moaning bleeders who spent the summer going it's too hot. I suppose you're happy now as you shuffle about in your three jumpers and your giant overcoat. My shoulder barometer is already reading rheumatic and cobwebs are silting up my veins. Happy now you meteorological killjoys?

I had measles as a five year old, on the ship coming to New Zealand. It was pretty mild, but it dicked around with my immune system for about 15–20 years. I had three months off school with rheumatic fever, and lots of skin infections and allergies. It could have been a lot worse. Please get vaxxed.

"If you are going to get a drug approved for rheumatic disease, esp. if you're going to put it on TV, esp. if you're hoping to make a billion dollars from it. You should have an FDA mandated obligation to do public education on that condition..." ~ Dr Jack Cush RheumNow podcast

I’d be gone from anaphylactic shock, unless the hygiene hypothesis of allergies would have made me not allergic to Brazil nuts.

Another contender: dead of cardiac complications of a sore throat, given the strep/scarlet fever/rheumatic fever progression. I caught strep OFTEN as a kid.

My father born 1914 was a giant of a man in a 5’4” frame. He had suffered 2 years with rheumatic fever. All his brothers easily enlisted but he couldn’t pass. It took three tries at three different recruiters & the third was a charm. That man fought to serve his country during WWII. Purple Heart 💜

I met friends in rheumatology from around the world. Too many to name and tag in this thread.

I found my current academic position.

I joined a research group that was able to generate the early evidence base for how COVID-19 affects people with rheumatic disease.
Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

I told a former PT that he was right when he said I may have “a touch of the rheumatism” 6-7 years ago. Looked up his new clinic, emailed him and explained all that has transpired to get my diagnosis.

This was his response which is so funny to me the way he asks for a google review 😂
