My first published essay was in The Globe & Mail last spring. It’s a bit of a preview into the topic of my forthcoming nonfiction book.

I struggled with my Chinese identity, but I’m learning to change
I grew up as a classic Canadian-born Chinese kid, but always felt that I had to choose between my two identities. I don’t want my daughter to feel the same way

One of my 2025 writing goals was to do a writers' residency. I'm so excited that I will be doing a Creative Sabbatical at the Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, Illinois. It's short: Feb 18-21, but honestly, that's perfect for me right now! #RWCPromoChallenge #writing

I was born on this day to Negro parents in Rome, New York at Griffiss Air Force Base Hospital. I claim myself a writer, a sewist, an artist, a cultural curator.

Throwback. November 2013. This was either at NWSA or AAA when I held my first book in my hands for the first time. When the writing gets hard sometimes, I remind myself that I have been here before and pushed through. #RWCPromoChallenge #writing

Reflecting on my writing in 2024: I track my writing time in a spreadsheet. In 2024 I wrote a total of 11,900 minutes (198 hours), which breaks down to 3.8 hours per week. I made a lot of progress on my 2 book projects. I participated in 32 co-writing sessions in The Sanctuary #rwcpromochallenge

I think I’m going to alternate writing & spending time on developing deeper character descriptions - getting in the heads of those who have more visibility. As I was #writing, some became more prominent than I initially intended. #Fiction #Novels #Authors #Writers #RWCPromoChallenge #WritersWrite
I talk a lot about getting into my character's heads. In a way, it's the same as what you're talking about. It's hard, yes. My character John? Not a head I wanted to get into. He's a bully. But, getting into his head actually helped me with his part in the story. it changed things.
January 16, 2025 at 6:04 AM
Great to hear that your character’s side trip improved your #plot. I’m following mine & hope to have a similar result! #Fiction #Novels #Authors #Writers #Writing #RWCPromoChallenge #WritersWrite
So relatable. Sometimes, it's helpful to follow them where they want to go and see if they meander back to your outline... but I'm not sure I'm 'Type A.' I had an outline, and most of what's on it is in my manuscript, but one of my characters took an unseen turn that really punched up the plot.
January 16, 2025 at 6:01 AM
I’m slogging through, letting the characters lead me some, but I need them to participate some kind of way in the plot or I won’t get to the end. But I’m only in the 6th chapter, 20k words in. Thankfully it’s all enjoyable. #Fiction #Novels #Authors #Writers #Writing #RWCPromoChallenge #WritersWrite
I get it all down and then edit later.
January 16, 2025 at 5:59 AM
Helpful! As #ToniMorrison says, #firstdrafts are painful, & revisions are more enjoyable. I’m having fun, but it is challenging. I’m learning how to let my characters do their thing, but I do need them to participate in the plot. #Fiction #Novels #Authors #Writers #RWCPromoChallenge #WritersWrite
In the first draft, I let them wander. By the third or fourth draft, if the wandering isn't relevant to the plot, then I do a little pruning. I've had some characters really evolve by letting them do their thing. In the early stages, I think keeping that creative flow going is more important.
January 16, 2025 at 5:56 AM
That is a great idea for when I need a break! Maybe I’ll do that before I’m planning to work on more character backgrounds & descriptions, when I’d only be #writing about one character. Thank you! #Fiction #Novels #Authors #Writers #RWCPromoChallenge #WritersWrite
I'd go have a great meal, perhaps even a glass of wine. Whoever comes back with you to your desk, write about them. - B
