I actually had a very similar response to Ananthamurthy's *Samskara* when I read it in undergrad. The realities of the precolonial world are a visceral shock to many in the West!

Past Samskara-s (impressions) that surface are sometimes of such strength that they manifest in the form of unwanted thoughts/actions/dreams despite oneself. The way out at such times is to stay calm, sticking to honest and regular practice, requesting the Lord for strength.
