"SPINDLE with foot plate. Made of gold with baroque pearl, rose stones and enamel. The spider with the legs of gold, with remnants of black enamel, the back body (abdomen) consisting of a large baroque pearl, the underside convex of black enamel, the head and mouthpiece with a rose stone. Diameter with outer ring: 8.3 cm. Plate, diameter: 7.8 cm. Foot plate: Of gilt silver, square with beveled turned down edge, upper side coated with green enamel on grass-like bottom pattern. Weight: 3.7 gr. Page length: 2.6 Antaglian Russian work from the 18th century. Purchased by Wilhelmina von Hallwyl September 1896 from antiques dealer Ed Kahlert, Germany. The giant spider design invokes the Yōkai Tsuchigumo (see label) 🕷️🕸️
It was definitely one of the highlights of the Met’s Kimono Style exhibition!

Weber Worn under an outer garment or at home, the nagajuban frequently bore eye-catching designs that would be seen only by family and friends. The large spider perched on the right shoulder of the crepe silk robe, whose back is covered with a web against gray clouds, exemplifies such a decoration. The pattern could be a reference to Tsuchigumo, a monstrous, shape-shifting spider featured in Japanese myths and legends as well as in Noh and Kabuki plays. The dramatic, supernatural subject was also featured in ukiyo-e prints, which might have inspired this nagajuban's composition.
