The Middlegate Pliosaur On a field trip to Middlegate Quarry, owned by Cemex UK, on the 28th of October 2017 some bones were found by myself from an Inland exposure of Kimmeridge Clay. In spite of being covered in thick clay they were clearly those of a large pliosaur. Top predators in the Kimmeridge Clay seas, and are therefore rare. It was clear from the outset this is an important find. Here you see members of the excavation team exposing in-situ bones. Dr Michael Oates recovering in-situ ammonites.
