This is a pennant of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's 11th Artillery Regiment, which was stationed at the Camp Makomanai in Sapporo.
Lengh 68cm (26.7in). Circa 1970s or 1980s. #vintage
1. The 11th Artillery Regiment pennant. It features an illustration printed on white fabric. The left side of the flag is trimmed with black fabric, and green fringe adorns the top and bottom edges. The 11th Artillery Regiment was organized from 1962 to 2008. It has since been reorganized into the 11th Artillery Unit. 2. The illustration depicts three artillery pieces. 3. Close-up of the illustration. Three artillery pieces are depicted. The top piece features a long, slender barrel, possibly an anti-aircraft gun. "This self-portrait, also known as Leading the Life in the West, refers to Orpen's life as a young artist in the West End of London. Orpen stands reflected full-length in a mirror in his studio, wearing a bowler hat and holding gloves and a riding crop. A shelf below the mirror holds paintbrushes and rags, the tools of the artist's trade, as well as several bottles of liquor. Various pieces of correspondence, including an I.O.U. signed by Orpen, are tucked behind the frame of the mirror, further testifying to the pleasures and distractions of the painter's early career. Funny thing about this piece is thati couldn’t find a publisher. I ended up including it in my self published collection. It struck a chord with readers. Sadly, its relevance as a tale about Handala, the immortal Palestinian child refugee, keeps growing.

In art, and in storytelling, my abiding fondness is for work which - to quote Seamus Heaney’s line about John Clare - “resolves extreme experience into something gentle”. For book club tonight we read Luke Paterson’s “A Savage Turn”, an astonishing, powerful, tough and enormously tender collection:
This and the next two photos depict one page each of Luke Patterson’s poem “To What Earth We’re Heir”. An accessible alternative to the Pap smear has been endorsed by the American Cancer Society. On Thursday, it released new guidelines saying that self-collection is an acceptable way to test for the virus that causes cervical cancer.

In this transitional work of 1946 the subtle persistence of the Cubist grid system is felt in the panels that organize the composition and orient major pictorial details in vertical or horizontal positions. However, Pollock’s dependence on Pablo Picasso has virtually dissolved, giving way to a more automatic, fluidly expressive style. Line loses its descriptive function and begins to assume a self-sufficient role, the rhythm, duration, and direction of each brushstroke responding to the artist’s instinctual gesture. The compositional focus is multiplied and decentralized, and areas of intense activity fill the entire surface. Fragmented figural elements are increasingly integrated into the shallow pictorial space, as background, foreground, and object merge and the texture of the paint gains in importance. By 1945 the vigor and originality of Pollock’s work had prompted the critic Clement Greenberg, one of his earliest champions, to write in The Nation of April 7: “Jackson Pollock’s second one-man show at Art of This Century . . . establishes him, in my opinion, as the strongest painter of his generation and perhaps the greatest one to appear since Miró.” Primitive art forms are alluded to in the crudely drawn arrows, cult and stick figures, and ornamental markings discernable in Circumcision. Totemic figures (the rotund being standing at the left and the owl-like creature at upper center) are posed stiffly, observing what seems to be a scene of violence in the center of the canvas. The enactment of a rite of passage is suggested, but the visual evidence does not encourage a specific reading. Pollock’s concern with archetypal imagery and pancultural rituals and mythologies is evoked with varying degrees of specificity in his work. Lee Krasner suggested the title to Pollock after the painting was completed. ~ Lucy Flint
