The events in the Tempest took a great toll on G'raha. Between being subjected to Emet's cruel hand to being away from the tower for too long.

This WIP is from much further in my Silver Lining series so will be a while until we get there, but still I want to offer this glimpse.

I work on both Light of Hope and it's sequel in tandem. Is how I've always written. Writing out of order depending.
The flight to the Crystarium stretches on for what feels like eons. Or at least it does to Y'sato where he still sits, cradling an unconscious G'raha to his chest. He is steadily getting worse, his breaths so shallow Y'sato can barely discern them, and worse yet is the state of his crystal. The usual calm blue of his crystal arm is dimmer than he has ever seen it, having almost turned grey, translucent, with no signs of any ethereal azure glow swirling within, but what gets to him the most is how cold and unyielding it all feels under his fingertips. Lifeless, like stone. It is nothing at all like the warmth he felt against his fingertips when G'raha, even though Y'sato wasn't entirely sure about his identity at the time reached out to heal his bruised wrists when he was all delirious from the great toll of the Light. A gentle touch filled with such warmth, even from the crystal but now... Y'sato squeezes his eyes shut against the cold all too familiar fear he can feel surge within him, prickling at his skin. Please...Don't take him from me.

It happened early on in their relationship during the Crystal Tower expedition, still friends at the time. Both unknowing it would turn into... something more.

Excerpt below from the scene in question, including how G'raha reacted. A profound moment.
His fingers trembling slightly he brings his hand up from G'raha's shoulder to cup his cheek. Something he has never worked up the nerve to do before, but G'raha opened up enough for him and him alone to grace him with such a beautiful singing voice and- This feels like a paltry way to repay him in comparison, but still it feels right. Even through his glove, he can feel the warmth of his skin, although faint. A fire lit within. A true Seeker. G'raha leans into his affectionate touch, radiant smile never leaving his lips as he brings up his own hand to cup Y'sato's right cheek. His hand is warm against his skin. Surprisingly so, palm coming to rest against his jawbone. A calloused tipped thumb traces the old scar there, that mar his cheek, and Y'sato's eyes slip closed from the sensation, letting out a shuddering sigh. The fluttering sensation in his stomach is back, the tingling in his skin, his quickening heartbeat but he doesn't mind. He chases G'raha's touch, and when he opens his eyes, the green depths are filled with searing adoration, love. He voices his name before he can stop himself, his pupils dilating slightly. "Raha..." The minute widening of G'raha's eyes gives him away, as well as the stuttering of his tail which so far has been tapping the ground contently in a languid motion. His reaction has uncertainty crawl its way into Y'sato's chest and he pulls away from his touch, reluctantly lowering his own hand back to his side. "I'm sorry. Is it too soon to call you that? I meant no offense." "No it is alright. Tis just-" G'raha's tail resumes its tapping, now quicker, restless. "Was just unexpected is all." Y'sato finds his eyes on his again, and he searches them. He finds no doubt, no discomfort glinting therein. Only acceptance. The ready affection, the sentiment. It has Y'sato's heart swell. "So I can call you...Raha?" G'raha's ear flick from the novelty of being addressed thus, but his smile never falters."Yes. I admit I even enjoy it. Thank you for having such faith in me...Sato." The meaning in his words isn't lost on him, neither is the knowing glint in his eye. The weight of them, what he is saying, of hearing his name uttered thus unadorned, free of his tribal prefix... No one has called him by that name except his mother and she's- He blinks back against the unbidden tears he feels well behind his eyes, forces himself to smile brighter even when it trembles at the edges. For G'raha to call him thus. It means more to him than his friend will ever know. He ducks his head, bunts it against G'raha's shoulder. Both in an attempt to hide, but also to tell him he is grateful. So immensely grateful. G'raha chuckles, bringing up a hand to scratch him gently behind one of his ears. Now this G'raha has done before. When Y'sato disclosed to him about his true heritage not too long after they first met. He leans into it, flicks his ear to grant him better access. A couple traitorous tears escapes, but he wipes them away quickly. This is a happy moment. A profound moment. He doesn't want to spoil it with this display of emotion. Even when his tears come from a place of joy, not grief. The touch, the comforting scratch behind his ear lingers. Longer than what would be expected of friendship, but in this moment Y'sato doesn't care. There's no one here but them. G'raha is his other half. He knows this in his heart despite such words never having being spoken between them. And right now words aren't needed.

The sight that meets him has his blood run cold in his veins, breath hitching sharp in his throat. Worn with age as the phasmascape is, details are just as vivid as the two previous ones. Furthermore, this one is...different. Instead of being an image showing the devastation from afar, this one is...a close up...Angled in such a way it is clear the unlucky soul who captured this image stood just a few fulms away from their chosen subject, the image having a bird-like overview to it since they had been so close to this one fallen figure in particular... And he recognizes the fallen figure immediately as Y'sato, and...he still looks so young. Not much older than when G'raha saw him last. He is just laying there, crumpled in a heap on his back much like many of the other corpses, as if his strings have been cut, like on a marionette. Worse yet there is nary a mark on him, no discernible wounds, his black leather armor scuffed in places, his hair a little streaked with dirt and dust but otherwise, there is no telling of what has befallen him from appearance alone. It looks like he has fallen right where he stood. His sword, a blade G'raha does not recognize lays uselessly at his side, an arm laid out, elbow bent in an awkward angle... But what gets to G'raha the most is the expression on his face. Or rather, the lack of it. His once so vibrant green eyes which ever regarded him with such fondness, now dull, lifeless, staring at nothing. His jaw is all slack, mouth hanging open. He just looks…dead.

The shock of wild, blond messy hair gives this figure’s identity away first, and usually the sight of his dearest friend would fill him with comfort, flood his heart with warmth, and yet something is wrong. So horribly wrong. The movement, for one, strikes him first and has his skin crawl. The staccato way Y’sato lumbers towards him, tail and ears twitching, discordant, feet dragging and slipping on the damp ground, is not at all how he remembers him, his dearest friend. Yet despite his uncharacteristically cumbersome gait, he inexplicably keeps his balance. Hands clad with fingerless gloves fumble in the dark, reaching out for him, for G’raha. And he wants so badly to reach out for his friend, but the eyes that meet his are not the ones he has come to love, to cherish above all else. No, these eyes are vacant, lifeless. Not an ounce of emotion to be seen or found, his face all slack. It’s what stays G’raha’s hand, the sight before him driving a spike of coldest despair into his heart and yet he cannot tear his eyes away. As much as he tries to deny it, to fight it, it unnerves him, of how dilated Y’sato’s pupils are. Dark and round, two bottomless pits where his soul should be stares back at him, unseeing. Before him, there is naught but a walking dead man. A mockery of his friend born of his own delusions. A corpse. A corpse that speaks. “Raha, you lied to me.” It hits him like a punch to the gut. At once the sound of it, of the deep-seated longing in Y’sato’s voice has G’raha’s ears shot up into startled points, his eyes wide. It is there so clearly, laid bare for him to hear. The heartache, the sorrow, the hurt. “You deceived me, gave me a promise you never intended to keep...” It’s uncanny, hearing such heart-rending emotion in his voice, and yet his expression does not reflect it, his eyes just as vacant, his face just as slack as he fumbles blindly, the worn soles of his feet scraping along the ground as he staggers towards him. In the face of it G’raha can but stare wide eyed, disbelieving, his lips parted. In his chest, his heart pounds, willing him to move. To do something, but G’raha stands frozen.

"Perhaps Rammboes can be persuaded to have you join me this time. If not know I can be quite persuasive. Especially when I brandishes my daggers just so and shoots them one of the steely looks of mine. It never fails I tell you." He unsheathes one of his blades from its sheath at his hip for emphasis, twirling it masterfully in his hand before tossing it up into the air. Its keen edge glints in the sunlight before he just as skillfully catches it by its hilt. His daggers are of true far eastern make, gifted to him alongside his armor from his mentor Oboro himself. Lightweight and sleek they are primed to slip twix a man's ribs and the gaps of any armor like nothing. Still brandishing it he turns to G'raha, his eyes hardening as he holds his blade up horizontally, lengthwise in front of his face. The bright green of his gaze shines with such steel, unyielding. He smirks, as to lay bare his bluff. Yet he catches it, the unnerved look crossing G'raha's eyes as his ears draws back slightly. Y'sato's expression immediately softens, not wanting to frighten his friend unduly. "Y'sato. that won't be necessary. I appreciate your sentiment, but I don't want you to frighten my mentor half to death." G'raha is quick to recover all things considered, having faced such steel. His ears perk back up as he smiles nervously. "Besides Rammboes only means well. Is after all not ordinary foes you fight. My bow. With my current skill level I can only offer so much. Besides my duty is to observe. Nothing more..." G'raha tries to keep his spirits high, but Y'sato sees it, in the way his proud ears droops slightly, how he fidgets a bit with the fur lining of his warwolf boots with his hand not resting on his knee as he looks down at it, pouting. He lowers his dagger, slides it back into its sheath. His tail whaps at G'raha's back as a light reprimand. "Don't say such things about yourself. I have seen you with the bow. You are a remarkable marksman. I can only dream of reaching such mastery." He doesn't hold back with his glowing praise, cause he knows it to be true. He is no stranger to the bow, thanks to his tribal background, but he is no archer, his skills only sufficient enough to earn him a meal or two once in a while when using it for hunting. Again he sees a blush stain G'raha's cheeks, but he is quick in trying to brush it away, a wry smirk teasing in the corner of his mouth. "And you are a man of questionable discernment, but I appreciate the sentiment all the same. It makes me...glad to hear such words coming from someone with such renowned battle prowess." Y'sato feels his eyes on him again. He holds his gaze, and in them he sees relief. Such relief, and untold gratitude. "Truly, my friend. I can see why your enemies fear you. Such steel...I am glad I am not amongst their number." "Sorry if I frightened you." "Tis all right. I know you. It was all done in jest." "Alright. I will stay, but lay down at least." G'raha watches as Y'sato slowly raises his head to look at him, his tail doing another playful swish, his ears wiggling from joy. He does as he is bid and lays down on his side, curling up slightly as he faces G'raha, a tired yet content smile on his face. G'raha notes his pupils are still pretty much dilated. The fireweed showing no signs of leaving his system anytime soon. Gingerly seating himself on the edge of the bed G'raha keeps a respectable distance from his friend. He will stay until he has fallen asleep at least, hoping his presence alone will help fend away any nightmares. "If you like you can pet me." What! His ears shooting up from the suggestion, G'raha whips around to look at his friend, eyes wide, shocked. Y'sato is still looking at him with a sleepy fond smile but there is a playful glint in his eyes upon seeing G'raha's reaction. Then he speaks. "I meant my ears." O-oh...
