Perhaps I should have taken account of the "RSPB Adwick Washland" area marked on the map before attempting this #SlowWays walk from Mexborough to Bolton upon Dearne yesterday. Almost certainly fine when there hasn't been weeks of rain, and never more than knee deep, but pretty cold.

Very much an area for horses. #SlowWays between Maidenhead and Ascot. A curious route between paddocks and private property.

This weekend's #SlowWays. Winter trees on a Woking, Lightwater, Ascot walk. Stark, but beautiful. Made taller by reflection. Puddles. Look up, look down, Winter walks, don't frown. Also waterproof boots.

More #slowways walks today!

SanWin One (Sandiway > Winsford) starts well, but halfway in becomes a disaster: bridlepaths that vanish into hedges; stile shenanigans of all colours (wobbly, broken, missing), and a very navigational wobbles. Shame, as it looks good on the map, just not in reality!

Time for a quick #sitclub before pressing on to the end.

Two good #SlowWays; one fail.

Update later!

And so to yesterday's #SlowWays! And a reverse #busandback (walked to, bussed back).

First up, WarStre One (Warrington > Stretton). Mostly a road walk on an already verified route, but with some nice green bits.

Looking forward to the weekend already?

Got any adventures planned?

Different arches.
Yesterday's Ashstead-Banstead-Ewel-Tolworth #SlowWays yesterday. Unexpected sunshine too low to dry out the mud after the rain, but did lift the spirits.

Two short #SlowWays today Streatham to Balham to Clapham Balstr2 &Clabal1. Essentially a lovely stroll through Tooting Bec and Wandsworth Commons.

Another #SlowWays walk in wintry sunshine yesterday, making a walkable route from Broughton Astley to Kibworth Beauchamp in Leicestershire.

This is an Excel chart view of my walked SlowWays, with completed triangles shaded. Still can't get the waylist to display verified routes.

To get everything on my SlowWays walked routes connected (except New Quay-Aberaeron which is just too far to do as day trips). The other two gaps are reconnecting Bangor-Chester-Kelsall and Buckingham-Milton Keynes with the rest, which stretches from Skegness & Silsden to Weston-s-Mare & Southend).

Haven't posted much about #SlowWays or walking here for a while, so here are a few pictures of yesterday's walk from Stone to Hixon, mostly on the Trent & Mersey canal. Would do Alt text but they'd all say "icy canal".

What are your walking plans for 2026?

Got any walk, project or challenge goals?

I find the #slowways concept to be a wonderful thing.

In 2021 I even made 3 routes which are now verified primary routes out of Maidenhead.

Then I got rather fatter for a while and didn't walk so much.

So in 2026 I'm heading back onto Slow Ways to see what has changed (and lose some weight too).

Looking forward to a big year of exploring, expanding and strengthening the
@slowwaysuk.bsky.social walking network + a new project that's even bigger!

Kicked off with a NY hike from #Paignton to friends in #Totnes.

Well done. This looks like a really helpful and interesting app project.
There are a lot of knee jerk anti-AI responses, but actual, real information has been used for actual safety. The (highly correlated) AI is only used for *perceived* dangers, which tend to be over estimated.

For decades, urban walkers have been treated like vehicles, with mapping tools optimising routes for a single metric – travel time – while treating a dark alley and a high street as identical, if the distance is the same.

My trains have already got weird! Last #SlowWays of 2025 cancelled.

Couldn't get out today but might manage a #SlowWays walk on Monday. Possibly a new shortened NavSle (Navenby-Sleaford), maybe in reverse so that it is more uphill than down.

Ah, the merineum, crimbo-limbo, Twixmas. Today was a quiet walk through the local park. A #SlowWays runs through the top of it. But in the new year, what is it now? 10,000 walking routes to chose from. Spoilt for choice.

Where are you exploring today?

The next one would be a much bigger #BusAndBack challenge!

Check out #ScotLink's 913/915/976 route between #Glasgow and #Skye 😍

You could do it all at once, in segments over the year.. or just a leg of it.
