Lovely! Did you also find slowworms? Grass snakes or signs thereof? Baby rats? A hedgehog? My Felco secateurs?

Yes!!
Love these ever alert cacklers even the 1 that ate 1 of the Slowworms on my allotment!
Greatly maligned & persecuted by humans because they are highly adaptable omnivores like us, made more common by our land uses & thus more hated by us.
💙 #Magpie #BirdOfTheDay from #allotment & many walks.

If you're already in Washington, take a leaf out of the movie "Civil War" and fulfill your duty as you swore you would!
Otherwise, you're completely out of place in Washington, you slowworms!

Turning over sheets of plywood or corrugated iron is a bit of a compulsion, but when the reward is a shiny bronze slow-worm...

At the first look I thought this cat was eating a mouse, but it seems to be a frog.
My sister´s 1990s cats Tommy and Micky went outside too and sometimes brought frogs, lizards or slowworms home and ate them. OMG.

We have (rotting) log piles & stone / sandy rock piles with lizards & slowworms. Walking the dog in the mornings, I see a variety of beetles along the road verges & for the first time in several years, there are swallows picking up insects as they swoop above the pasture land. And we normally see >

But slowworms (native to the UK) are limbless lizards, which is not the same thing as a snake...

Can you see its head? A few years ago I created a place especially for Slowworms, having continually to leave compost or chippings bins because Slowworms were in residence. It's worked pretty well for them, and I've even found a sloughed skin in there.

We are lucky to have Slowworms in the garden, so know to keep an eye out for them. This young male took his time to slither across the step.

Moving a few things around in the garden today and came across this little beauty. Young slowworms like this seem to love the join between pavement and wall where plenty of leaves collect and rot down. We carefully moved this one to a safe spot only to find two more of this size and a larger one!

Why am I only finding out now that slowworms not only exist in Ireland, but my County is one of only 3 places they've been found. So much for auld Paddy getting rid of all the snakes.
Yes I know they aren't snakes but they're pretty close

We're currently catless. Sadly, we may stay that way. The destruction of so much wildlife (& we have plenty around the garden) is so depressing. This year I plan to move a large stone, sand &earth pile into the sheep field... chickens are barred (or baaa-ed) & slowworms, lizards etc can live safely.

I sort of grew up with them, but hadn't seen one for years... until yesterday in fact, in a weird bit of synchronicity! (my brother is a science educator, don't handle slowworms at home, kids)

I really like slowworms. They've got a real "fuck your taxonomy" vibe going on and I'm here for it.
