I can’t believe there are only 11 of us on this day trip.

We leave from Crystal Pool, go all the way out to Sooke Potholes by charter bus.

We have a naturalist guide as well as a First Nations guide, so we learn about habitat, conservation, Indigenous history & storytelling.

The CRD has now purchased the Kapoor Lands (~4800 acres), for $33.3m, as part of our ongoing efforts to preserve our watershed.

The Kapoor Lands were a longstanding acquisition target for the CRD, as they border Sooke Lake Reserve and are crucial to the watershed. They will no longer be logged.

Sooke Harbour On a fishing boat more among yachts across the bay Someone is pounding on metal - not the clang of a buoy swaying languorously beyond the harbour mouth, But a brutish whack whack I can make no sense of, nor tell what might need such bluntness to make fit To disengage shaft from bushing or whatever from the grip of rust . I might understand if I lived nearer to the sea, but then perhaps failed to notice the goal beside me on the dock tilt its head, One round eye, scanning the sky, The other fixed on little waves among the pilings, but intent on also watching me, watch what it attends to; Sky or waves, or both Its mind a gear finally meshes between emptiness and the reflective opacity of its desire, nonchalant as any human hunger, ready at any moment to unfurl its wings, give a single beat, and already be halfway out to sea.
