Wist je dat gletsjers koele lucht 'ademen'? Deze katabatische winden brengen zware, koude lucht vanaf de bergtoppen en ijskappen mee naar de dalen. Dat kan er voor mensen soms pittig aan toe gaan. Het positieve is dat gletsjers zo langer bewaard blijven.

Glaciers are awe-inspiring but I have to admit that they are visually much more appealing from a distance. Taken in May 2025 at Svinafellsjokull.

Svinafellsjokull is an outlet glacier in Vatnajökull National Park. It has a very good hiking trail that will get you very close (though not on it). The glacier is in southeast Iceland. In this photo the glacier can be seen in the distance "flowing" between mountains down to it termination. There is a small lake in front of the photo. This black-and-white photo is a close-up of the termination of the glacier. The glacier ends in a series of deep crevasses that are striped by rocks that have been ground into dust and there is melt water in front of it.
